There are two types of material giving: actually giving material things and giving only in thought. The first is divided into three: the manner of giving material things, what to do if one cannot give, and relying on the antidote to the obstacles of giving. The first is divided into four: the field to whom one gives, the intention with which one gives, the application of how one gives, and the object that one gives. The first is ten: a virtuous friend who helps oneself, an enemy who causes harm, an ordinary person who does neither good nor harm, one with qualities such as discipline, one with faults such as immorality, one inferior to oneself, one equal to oneself, one superior to oneself, one who is wealthy and happy, and one who is poor and destitute. Regarding intention, there are three points. What kind of intention is needed? It is necessary to have the intention, "Relying on this, I will perfect the perfection of giving, the accumulation of unsurpassed enlightenment," as the object of focus. From the beginning, the Bodhisattva has already given all possessions to sentient beings, so one should give one's own possessions as if taking back something entrusted, as the object of things. For fields that beg and do not beg, one should have the intention, "These are the ones who perfect my perfection of giving, they are my virtuous friends," as the object of the field. It is necessary to have these three intentions. As stated in the Compendium of Perfections: "If a beggar appears, that son of the Victorious One, in order to increase the accumulation of perfect enlightenment, he makes the thought of others, having made it to me, he gives, to the virtuous friend, he generates that thought." For the giving of each object, one should have the intention, "I will give for this and that purpose," as the object of the purpose. Detailed content can be learned from the Questions of Good Arm and the Compendium of Perfections. The intention of focusing on the field mentioned earlier is to be done for everything, so it is a common intention. The specific intentions are: for those who cause harm, have a loving heart; for those who suffer, have a compassionate heart; for those with qualities, have a joyful heart; for those who help, give with equanimity. For all fields, one must also have equanimity. The virtuous result of giving should also be dedicated to sentient beings such as beggars, and especially cherish the suffering field.

Thus, Chandrakirti said: "Whatever giving is free from miserliness, To those who are vessels or not vessels, Giving with an equal and balanced mind, That giving is superior to the giver. With love, giving and the fruit of giving, Both are sought simultaneously, Whatever giving is without miserliness, That is praised by the noble ones." Also in the "Praise of Infinite Qualities" it says: "Whoever sees beings of low birth and poverty, Possessing a mind of hope, Yet without love, desiring fruit, seeks other vessels endowed with qualities. Loss of thought, Although he gives, he is equal to beggars. Therefore, you should, with compassion, delight in giving to those who beg." Thus it is. What kind of thoughts should be abandoned? Not having the thought of holding wrong views, that is, not thinking that giving has no result, not thinking that harmful giving can become Dharma, not thinking that combined with auspiciousness and blessings, merely giving and the completion of giving can transform into worldly and transworldly detachment. Not having thoughts of arrogance, that is, not despising beggars, not competing with others, and even after giving, not boasting, "I am generous, but others are not like that." Also in the "Sutra of Purifying Karmic Obscurations" it says: "When ordinary people give alms, they do not trust the miserly, and this also generates anger and leads to hell, therefore it is said that giving has obstacles. When guarding morality, also because of speaking unpleasant words to those who are immoral, many people do not trust, and those who do not trust fall into evil destinies. Abiding in patience and so on, for those who abide in the non-concordant aspects of these, not speaking words of praise, that is the obstacle of morality and so on." Thus it is said. Therefore, one should do as it is said in the "Praise of Infinite Qualities": "When you have great hearing and wisdom, do not praise yourself, but also highly respect other beings with small qualities. When abiding in the accumulation of qualities, also guard your own small faults." Thus it is. Not having a dependent thought, that is, not giving in order to gain fame. Not having a timid thought, that is, being happy in mind even before giving.
