Thus. In the Garland of Jewels, it says: "Whatever merit there is in speaking thus, if that were to become colored, even the worlds of the number of grains of sand in the Ganges would not be able to contain it. This was said by the Bhagavan, and reason also appears in this. The realm of sentient beings is immeasurable, and the desire to benefit them is also like that." Thus. Furthermore, one should not take what one already has, nor should one accept what others give, such as retinues and possessions that obstruct the increase of giving, increase miserliness, prevent the arising of generosity when it has not arisen, and cause it to decline when it has arisen. As it says in the Compendium of Perfections: "By what does the fault of miserliness increase? The deceptions that hinder the increase of the mind of complete giving, the Bodhisattva should completely abandon all of them. Whatever is the antidote to the mind of giving, if it obstructs the path to true enlightenment, such wealth or precious royal power, the Bodhisattva should not accept." Thus. When acting in this way, if one becomes attached to possessions due to miserliness, then one should remember that the Able One abandoned all possessions and attained enlightenment, and that one has also vowed to follow in his footsteps. If I have previously given my body, enjoyments, and all virtues to sentient beings, and now I am attached to enjoyments, my behavior is like an elephant who, when tormented by the sun, enters the water to bathe, and when it reaches the shore, rolls around on the ground, and when it sees that its body is covered with dirt, enters the water again. Then it acts as before. Thinking in this way, one should not become attached. As it says in the same text: "Remember the supreme conduct of the Able Ones, and think of your own vows to follow them. For the sake of completely eliminating attachment to possessions, generate these excellent thoughts in your mind. I have given my body to all beings, and since I have given that, I have also abandoned the Dharma. If I were to become attached to external things, it would not be reasonable for me, like an elephant bathing." Thus. If one thinks of the many benefits of giving in this way and generates great joy, and if one thinks of the faults of holding on and generates great fear through this door, then the mind of giving will naturally arise. Similarly, cultivating loving-kindness and compassion, and the liberation of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

After contemplating generosity and other virtues, one should also generate the mind of giving. The way to generate it is as stated in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Body and likewise enjoyments, and all the virtues of the three times, for the sake of accomplishing the benefit of all sentient beings, give without any miserliness." As it is said, with the body, enjoyments, and the roots of virtue as the three objects of focus, one mentally gives to all sentient beings. In this way, by reversing the attachment of clinging to all possessions as one's own, and repeatedly training the mind of giving to others, one is called a Bodhisattva. As stated in the Compendium of Perfections: "All these are your possessions; I have no pride in them. Such wonderful thoughts, again and again, follow the qualities of the perfect Buddha. Whoever has them is called a Bodhisattva, the Buddha speaks of them as inconceivable noble beings." As it is said. Now, because faith is not yet mature and strength is weak, although one has mentally given the body to sentient beings, one does not actually give flesh and so on. However, if one does not train the mind of giving up body and life, because there is no familiarity, one will not be able to give up body and life even now, as stated in the Compendium of Trainings, so one must train the mind from now on. In this way, having made a firm decision to give food, clothing, and shelter to sentient beings from the depths of one's heart, when using them, if one forgets the thought that "these should be used for the benefit of others" and uses them with attachment for oneself, it is a downfall of defilement. If there is no attachment, but one forgets to establish the awareness of focusing on all sentient beings, or if one is attached for the sake of another sentient being, it is a downfall that is not defiled. Regarding those things that have been dedicated to others, if one perceives them as the property of others and uses them for oneself, it becomes taking what has not been given, and if the value is complete, it becomes a defeat of individual liberation, as stated in the Compendium of Trainings. Regarding this, some argue that "because it is dedicated to all sentient beings, it is impossible for the value to be complete for one sentient being, so there will be no defeat." Others say that "because the entire object is dedicated to each sentient being, this is not reasonable." Still others say that "although it is dedicated to others, they have not taken possession of it, so there is no defeat." The intention is that for human beings, having dedicated something from the depths of one's heart, and the other person also knows and takes possession of it, if one perceives it as the property of others and takes it for oneself, then the value is complete.
