Unlike others, one should first understand the precepts well. After practicing the continuum, and then being happy to uphold them, the vows are bestowed. As it says in the Bodhisattva-bhumi: "If one wishes to properly take the precepts of a Bodhisattva's discipline, one should first proclaim from this mother of the Bodhisattva's Sutra Pitaka, which teaches the basis of the Bodhisattva's training and the places of transgression. If one examines it from the depths of one's heart and analyzes it with wisdom, and then becomes joyful, and not for the sake of making others uphold it properly, nor for the sake of competing with others, then one should know that this is a steadfast Bodhisattva, and this proper discipline should also be accepted by him, and it should also be bestowed upon him." Therefore, after understanding the precepts, contemplating them in one's mind, and sincerely wanting to learn them, if one practices and then takes the vows, one will become very stable, so this is a good method. If this is explained both here and below, it will make the text too burdensome, so it will be explained below. Secondly, in the commentary on the chapter on discipline, it says: "First, the method of taking them, immediately followed by the method of guarding against root downfalls and offenses, and the method of remedying them if they are broken, have all been thoroughly established, so it is necessary to look at them before taking the vows, and understand them there." Thirdly, there are three points: the basis of what is to be learned, how the things to be learned are gathered there, and the order of how to learn them. The first point is that although the distinctions of appearance are limitless, if one gathers them by category, the Bodhisattva's precepts are all contained within the six perfections, so the six perfections are a summary of all the essential points of the Bodhisattva's path, a great summary. The four ways of gathering are also contained therein. Giving is easy to gather. Sweet speech is teaching disciples based on the six perfections. Beneficial action is applying the meaning of the teachings to benefit others. Acting in accordance with the Dharma is practicing oneself in the same way as the disciples.

Therefore, it is said that the basis for collecting the six perfections is supreme. The second has two parts: first, the determination of the actual meaning and number; second, the incidental demonstration of the determination of the order. The first is that the Blessed One briefly summarized the six perfections, and the holy Regent explained the key points of the reasons for doing so according to his intention, generating certainty. These are the methods for determining the number. If one gains a delightful certainty about these, then one will come to regard the practice of the six perfections as the supreme advice, so one should gain certainty. Among these six, the numerical determination in terms of higher realms is that the great deeds of enlightenment must be accomplished through countless lifetimes. However, even then, in order for the stages of the path to arise, without a basis that is completely perfect with all the qualities, even if one practices with only a fraction of the qualities of this present basis, nothing will be accomplished. Therefore, one needs a basis that is perfect in all aspects. Furthermore, one needs four perfections: the perfection of resources to be used, the perfection of the body to use them, the perfection of retinue to use them with, and the perfection of accomplishing whatever tasks are undertaken. However, even with just those perfections, they often become causes of afflictions, so one must also not be controlled by afflictions. Even that is not enough, so one must be able to clearly distinguish between what should be adopted and what should be abandoned, and to properly engage and disengage. Otherwise, like bamboo and aquatic trees that are destroyed by bearing their own fruit, and like a mule that dies from pregnancy, that very perfection will become the cause of destruction. If there is wisdom, one will know that it is the result of past good deeds, and will strive again in the causes to increase them. If there is no wisdom, then one will exhaust the fruits of past accumulations by enjoying them, and will not generate new ones, so the beginning of suffering will commence in the future. Therefore, the occurrence of these six in future lives does not arise from causelessness or from causes that are not in harmony, and the subsequent cause is also definitely the six perfections. Therefore, in this life, one should constantly cultivate and repeatedly practice the six perfections. Because the more difference that is put into the cause, the more differences will arise in the result. These are the higher realms of temporary states, and the perfection of the body, etc., is ultimate.
