Yes. Because the generosity and so on, which are aroused by clinging to the two as inverted, are impure, they are said to be the work of demons. It is not that generosity and so on are shown as the work of demons. Otherwise, since all six perfections are mentioned, then meditation and wisdom should also be considered the work of demons. The meaning of the second quote is also that it is said of the impure because it is aroused by clinging to what appears inverted. It is not that it shows that generosity and so on should not be relied upon. If it were not so, then one would fall into the object of focus, and it would be said, "Generosity has been given," so there would be no need to fall into the object of focus, but one should confess the general giving. Because the scripture should say that, but it does not say so. It is very important that the last part of the Stages of Meditation answers in this way. Because if this is understood in an inverted way, all ways of acting will be taken as grasping at the characteristics of the self of the person or the self of phenomena, and will be considered to have characteristics. If the mind of giving that thinks, "This thing should be given away," and the mind of restraining that thinks, "This misdeed should be restrained," and all such virtuous thoughts are the grasping at the self of phenomena that grasps at the three spheres, then those who have found the view of the selflessness of phenomena should refute it in all ways, just like hatred and pride and so on. It should not be relied upon for that purpose. If all the thoughts that think, "This is this," are taken as the grasping at the self of phenomena that grasps at the three spheres, then thinking about the qualities of the spiritual friend, thinking about leisure and endowment, thinking about death and the suffering of the lower realms, taking refuge, and from this action this result will arise, love and compassion, cultivating the mind of enlightenment, and cultivating the training of the conduct of the Bodhisattva, all of these must be thought about, "This is this, from this this will arise, this has this quality and fault," and thus one must generate certainty. The more certainty that is generated about these, the more the grasping at the self of phenomena will increase. Conversely, the more certainty that is cultivated about the selflessness of phenomena, the more the certainty of those paths will decrease. Thus, the two aspects of conduct and view will contradict each other like hot and cold, and there will be no place to generate strong and lasting certainty in both. Therefore, just as in the stage of the result, the Dharmakaya can be established as what is to be attained, and the Rupakaya can also be made as what is to be attained, and these two do not contradict each other. The path of
