Moreover, it is said in the first chapter: The perfection of wisdom is not the mother, skillful means is the father. Also, in the "Questions of Light-Bearer Sutra," it is said: Light-Bearer, just as a king who is controlled by his ministers can accomplish all that is needed, so too, the wisdom of a Bodhisattva that is completely controlled by skillful means can accomplish all the deeds of a Buddha. Therefore, one should meditate on emptiness that possesses all the excellent aspects of having all the aspects of skillful means such as generosity. Merely meditating on emptiness alone will not lead to the Mahayana path. As it says in the "Jeweled Crown Sutra": He puts on the armor of loving-kindness and abides in the place of great compassion, and meditates on the emptiness that possesses all the excellent aspects. What is the emptiness that possesses all the excellent aspects? It is that which is inseparable from generosity, inseparable from ethics, inseparable from patience, inseparable from diligence, inseparable from meditation, inseparable from wisdom, and inseparable from skillful means. This was extensively taught. The meaning of this is also stated in the "Uttaratantra": What are those that are the questioners? Generosity, ethics, patience, and so on. Emptiness, which possesses all excellent aspects, is expressed as form. Some know the head but not the rest, some know the hand but not the rest. For example, if many painters gather to paint a picture of a king, it will not be complete if even one painter is missing. The picture of the king is likened to emptiness, and the painters are likened to generosity and so on. Therefore, if the means such as generosity are incomplete, it is like a picture with a missing head or hand. Furthermore, to say that it is sufficient to meditate only on emptiness and that there is no need to meditate on anything else is something that the Blessed One himself refuted after taking the former position. If that were the case, then the generosity, ethical conduct, and other virtuous deeds performed by Bodhisattvas over many eons would be said to be corrupt wisdom that has not understood the definitive meaning. As it says in the "Compendium of Determinations": Maitreya, the perfect accomplishment of the six perfections by Bodhisattvas is for the sake of perfect enlightenment.

Those foolish people say, 'A Bodhisattva should only study the Perfection of Wisdom. What is the use of the other perfections?' They say this and disparage the other perfections. Maitreya, what do you think? Was it a derangement of wisdom for the one who became the king of Kashi to give his own flesh and blood for the sake of a pigeon?' Maitreya replied, 'Bhagavan, it was not.' The Bhagavan said, 'Maitreya, when I was practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, did those roots of virtue that I accumulated with the roots of virtue endowed with the six perfections harm me?' Maitreya replied, 'Bhagavan, they did not.' The Bhagavan said, 'Maitreya, you too have perfectly accomplished the Perfection of Generosity for sixty eons, the Perfection of Ethics for sixty eons, the Perfection of Patience for sixty eons, the Perfection of Diligence for sixty eons, the Perfection of Meditation for sixty eons, and the Perfection of Wisdom for sixty eons. Yet those foolish people say, "There is only one way to achieve enlightenment, namely, through the way of emptiness." By doing so, their conduct becomes completely impure. Therefore, to say that if one has the realization of emptiness, one does not need to exert great effort in cultivating the aspect of skillful means is to slander the good former lives of one's own teacher, saying that those were times when they had not understood the definitive meaning. If one thinks that cultivating practices such as generosity in various ways is because one does not have a firm realization of emptiness, and that having the realization of emptiness is enough, that is also a great wrong view. For if that were correct, then the princes who have realized the ultimate truth, obtained non-conceptual wisdom, and entered the great Bodhisattva grounds, and especially the eighth-ground Bodhisattvas who have gained mastery over non-conceptual wisdom, would not need to practice. That is not reasonable, because each of the ten grounds has generosity and so forth as the main part, even though there are other

"It is not unused either." As stated in the Dashabhumika Sutra, it is said that in each bhumi, one practices six or ten perfections. The meaning of these has also been explained in this way by the venerable Asanga, Nagarjuna, and Asanga, so it cannot be forced into other ways. Especially in the case of the eighth bhumi, when all afflictions have been exhausted and one abides in the ultimate truth where all elaborations are pacified, the Buddhas tell him that with just this realization of emptiness, one cannot attain enlightenment, because the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas have also attained this non-conceptualization. Look at my (Buddha's) body, wisdom, and fields, etc., which are immeasurable. You also do not have my powers, etc. Therefore, strive diligently. Think of those untamed beings who are disturbed by various afflictions. Do not abandon this patience either. After encouraging in this way, it is said that one must learn the conduct of a Bodhisattva. If one is content with just a small samadhi and abandons others, that is a laughing matter for the wise. As it is also said in the Dashabhumika Sutra: "O son of the Victorious One, the Bodhisattva who abides in this immovable bhumi of the Bodhisattva, due to the power of previous aspirations and abiding in the continuity of the Dharma gate, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, accomplish the Tathagata's wisdom for him. And they also say to him: 'O son of good family, well done, well done! This is also ultimate patience for realizing all the Buddha's Dharmas. However, you do not have my ten powers and fearlessness, etc., the complete Buddha Dharmas. Strive diligently to fully seek the complete Buddha Dharmas. Do not abandon this gate of patience either. O son of good family, even though you have attained such peaceful liberation, think of those untamed ordinary beings who are not pacified, various afflictions constantly arise, and are tempted in various ways.' Again, 'O son of good family, remember the past aspirations and the attainment of the benefit of sentient beings and the inconceivable gate of wisdom.' Again, 'O son of good family.'
