Although there is no transgression of the root downfall, there will be an offense because there is a violation of the precepts of the intermediate virtue that has been taken, so it must be confessed with the four powers. After obtaining the Bodhisattva vows, because it will become a downfall that violates the precepts of the vows, it is sufficient to do as it is said to purify the downfall, which is included in the precepts of entering the mind, and there is nothing else. However, generating the mind six times is the uncommon precept of the aspiration mind. Third, there are three ways to learn behavior after generating the mind: the reason why one must learn the precepts after generating the mind; explaining that one cannot attain Buddhahood by learning only individual means and wisdom; explaining the order of learning the precepts. First, like this, after generating the aspiration mind, not learning the things to be learned such as giving, although the benefits are great as in the quote from the Maitreya Liberation Sutra quoted earlier. However, if one does not take the Bodhisattva's precepts with practice as the core, it is impossible to attain enlightenment, so one must learn behavior. The Gaya Gori says: Enlightenment is attained by the great Bodhisattvas who take practice as the core, but not by those who take wrong practice as the core. Also, the Samadhiraja Sutra says: Therefore, practice should be taken as the core. Why is that? Young man, because by taking practice as the core, it is not difficult to obtain unsurpassable perfect enlightenment. It is said that practice is the method of attaining Buddhahood, because it is learning the Bodhisattva's precepts. The first chapter of the Stages of Meditation also says: Thus, the Bodhisattva who has generated the mind, knowing that he cannot subdue others without subduing himself, diligently engages in practicing giving and so on. Without practice, one cannot attain enlightenment. The Commentary on Valid Cognition also says: The loving one, in order to destroy suffering, diligently engages in various methods. Because the appearance of the method is hidden by cause and effect, it is difficult to explain it. It is said that if one has great love for others, one must eliminate their suffering. To eliminate suffering, it is not enough to have a good heart that hopes they will be free from suffering, one must engage in the method of eliminating suffering. Moreover, if one has not previously engaged in that method oneself, one cannot help others.

Since one cannot liberate others, one must first tame oneself if one wishes to accomplish the benefit of others. For that, it is said that practice must be taken as the essence. It is also said that practice should be done by taking vows and learning their precepts. Therefore, it is very important not to err in what is taken as the essence of practice. Secondly, it is not enough to merely want to attain Buddhahood; entering the means to attain Buddhahood must also be a method that is not mistaken. Because no matter how much one strives on a mistaken path, no result will occur, just like pulling on a horn when wanting to milk a cow. Even if it is not mistaken, if the conditions are incomplete, striving will not produce results, just as a sprout will not grow if any of the seeds, water, soil, etc., are incomplete. Therefore, in the Middle Stages of Meditation, it says: "If one exerts effort on a mistaken cause, one will not obtain the desired result even after a very long time, just like milking milk from a horn. No result will arise from not employing all the causes, because if any of the seeds, etc., are missing, the result of sprouts, etc., will not arise. Therefore, since one desires that result, one should rely on causes and conditions that are not mistaken and are complete." So, what are the complete and un mistaken causes and conditions? The Manifestation of Clear Knowing says: "Lord of Secrets, the wisdom of omniscience arises from the root of compassion, arises from the cause of bodhicitta, and is perfected by means." Compassion has already been explained. Bodhicitta refers to the two types of bodhicitta, conventional and ultimate, and means refers to the complete perfection of generosity, etc., as explained by the great chariot Kamalaśīla. Some, such as the Chinese Hwa Shang, have a reversed understanding of such a path, saying: Once there is conceptual thought, not to mention bad thoughts, even good thoughts bind one to samsara, so its result will not transcend samsara, just like being bound by a gold chain and a rope chain, just like white and black clouds obscuring the sky, just like being bitten by either a white or black dog causes suffering. Therefore, abiding without thinking of anything is the path to enlightenment, and generosity and keeping the precepts are for meditating on such definitive meaning.
