Because this was spoken for the sake of incapable fools. If one were to attain the definitive meaning and then engage in those practices, it would be like a king descending among his subjects, or like searching for the tracks of an elephant after having already found the elephant. In this regard, the Hwa-shang cited eighty sources from sutras that praised non-thinking to prove his point. He greatly slandered the conventional, saying that all aspects of skillful means are not the true path to Buddhahood. By preventing the examination of the selflessness of reality, the essence of the Victorious One's teachings, with discriminating wisdom, he abandoned the ultimate truth from afar. No matter how much effort is put in, it can only be compared to the aspect of calm abiding, and the extreme of these wrong views that hold the mere settling of the mind in calm abiding as the supreme path. This was thoroughly refuted by the great Bodhisattva Kamalaśīla with a collection of immaculate scriptures and reasoning, and he expanded the excellent path that pleases the Victorious Ones. However, as the teachings are nearing decline, and the holy ones who have exhausted the definitive meaning of the scriptures and the immaculate reasoning that definitively concludes the essential points of the path, and because sentient beings have very little merit and, although they have some faith in the Dharma, the power of their wisdom is very small, even now some people still despise practices such as guarding vows and abandoning them when meditating on the path, just like the Hwa-shang. Some, apart from slandering the aspects of skillful means, think that the Hwa-shang's view is correct. Others abandon discriminating wisdom and think that the Hwa-shang's meditation of not thinking about anything is the best. Their path does not appear even in the aspect and realm of meditating on emptiness. Even if it is assumed that they are meditating on emptiness, only those who have correctly realized the meaning of emptiness and meditate without error should meditate on emptiness alone. If one were to say that practices that have conventional objects should not be meditated on, or that it is not necessary to take them as a basis and not necessary to strive from many aspects, then that would completely contradict all the scriptures and would only appear to be beyond the scope of reason. Because what is to be accomplished by those of the Great Vehicle is

is to abide in the quiescence of Nirvana. Among them, not abiding in Samsara is accomplished through the wisdom that realizes Suchness and the stages of the path that rely on ultimate truth, as well as the profound path, which is the accumulation of wisdom and the aspect of wisdom. Not abiding in the quiescence of Nirvana is because it must be accomplished through the wisdom of knowing all phenomena and the stages of the path that rely on conventional truth, as well as the vast path, which is the accumulation of merit and the aspect of skillful means. As it is said in the Secret Inconceivable Sutra: "The accumulation of wisdom will abandon all afflictions. The accumulation of merit will cause all sentient beings to live closely. Bhagavan, therefore, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should strive for the accumulation of merit and wisdom." And, in the Noble Akashagarbha Sutra, it is said: "With the wisdom of wisdom, one can completely abandon all afflictions. With the wisdom of skillful means, one does not completely abandon all sentient beings." And, in the Noble Samdhinirmocana Sutra, it is said: "Not being inclined towards the benefit of sentient beings, and not being inclined towards all fabricated phenomena, I have not taught as unsurpassed perfect enlightenment." Thus. In the Vimalakirti Nirdesa Sutra, it is said: "What is the bondage of Bodhisattvas? What is liberation? To grasp existence without skillful means is the bondage of Bodhisattvas. To go into existence with skillful means is liberation. To grasp existence without wisdom is the bondage of Bodhisattvas. To go into existence with wisdom is liberation. Wisdom not grasped by skillful means is bondage. Wisdom grasped by skillful means is liberation. Skillful means not grasped by wisdom is bondage. Skillful means grasped by wisdom is liberation." Thus, it is extensively taught. Therefore, wanting to attain Buddhahood, from now on, in the process of the path, one must rely on both skillful means and wisdom, and one cannot neglect either, otherwise it will not be accomplished. As it is said in the Gaya Gori Sutra: "The path of Bodhisattvas, in short, is these two. What are the two? They are skillful means and wisdom." And, glorious excel
