Those also arise only occasionally, and even if they do arise, their strength is not great, they do not last long, but quickly separate. It is also difficult to be born in the lower realms, and even if one is born there, one is quickly liberated, and the suffering there is small, and therefore one becomes very weary of samsara, and compassion arises for those beings as well. If the merit of the mind of enlightenment were to become a tangible object, even the sky would not be able to contain it, and offering material things to the Buddha would not be enough to satisfy even a small part of it. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Bhavyadatta: If the merit of the mind of enlightenment had a form, it would fill the entire expanse of the sky, and it would be even greater than that. If someone were to fill Buddha fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges with jewels and offer them to the Protector of the World, it would be surpassed by the offering of someone who joins their palms and directs their mind towards enlightenment. That has no limit. So it is said. When the great Lord Atisha was circumambulating the Vajra Throne (Bodh Gaya), he thought, "How can I quickly attain perfect enlightenment?" So he built small Buddha images, and asked those great beings who wanted to quickly attain Buddhahood what they should study, and they replied that they should study the mind of enlightenment. Moreover, in the sky above Gandhola, a young man asked an old woman, and he heard the same answer, so he became deeply convinced of the mind of enlightenment. Thus, the essence of all the key instructions of the Great Vehicle, the great treasure of all accomplishments, the characteristic of the Great Vehicle that distinguishes it from the Lesser Vehicle, the sacred support that encourages the princes to engage in great deeds, is to recognize the mind of enlightenment, and to increase one's enthusiasm for cultivating it, like a thirsty person hearing the sound of water. Having examined the paths with incredibly subtle wisdom for many eons, it is seen by the Buddhas and their heirs that this alone is the sacred means of attaining Buddhahood. Therefore, It is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: Having contemplated for many eons, the Buddhas have only seen this benefit. In order to increase the arising of the mind of enlightenment, one must train in generating the mind of enlightenment six times, which is divided into two parts: the aspirational mind of enlightenment.

Not abandoning and training in increasing it. First, like this, taking the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and spiritual friends as witnesses, in their presence, make a vow to liberate beings who have not yet been liberated, and so on. If, because you see that beings are numerous and act badly, or that it takes a long time to strive for many eons, or that the two accumulations are limitless and difficult to do, and so on, you become discouraged and abandon the burden of generating bodhicitta, then the sin is greater than the downfall of individual liberation. The Compendium says: "If for billions of eons, you practice the ten virtuous paths, and desire to achieve the fruit of a self-conqueror, a solitary realizer, or an arhat, then the discipline is damaged, the morality is destroyed. This is heavier than the defeat of others, bodhicitta is especially heavy." Here it is said that the morality of that bodhisattva is corrupted. The mental discipline of hearers and solitary realizers is the supreme morality of bodhisattvas, so if it is damaged, the morality is destroyed. If you do not abandon it, even if you enjoy desirable qualities without restraint, the uncommon discipline of bodhisattvas—the mind of aspiration—will not be destroyed. That same text says: "If a bodhisattva enjoys the five desirable qualities, and takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the noble ones as refuge, and thinks of achieving the fruit of Buddhahood, contemplating omniscience, the wise should understand that they abide in the perfection of morality." Therefore, if you abandon the bodhicitta that you have promised, you must wander in the lower realms for a long time. The Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds says: "Even if you give a small thing in thought, and then do not give it to those beings, it is said that you will be born as a hungry ghost. How much more so if you desire to satisfy all beings with the supreme bliss, but instead deceive them with this, how can you be born in a happy realm?" Therefore, that same text says: "Like a blind person finding a treasure in a pile of garbage, how could bodhicitta arise in me?" Like this, it is extremely rare that I have obtained such a bodhicitta, you should think like this, and in no way abandon it. That is, you should especially focus on this, and make many vows not to abandon it even for a moment. Second, it is not enough just not to abandon it, you must strive to increase it three times a day and three times a night. That is, complete the elaborate ritual described earlier.
