One should take refuge like reciting "Shadpa." Please, teacher, consider me. I, named ..., from this time onwards, until reaching the essence of enlightenment, take refuge in the supreme of the two-legged, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat. Please, teacher, consider me. I, named ..., from this time onwards, until reaching the essence of enlightenment, take refuge in the supreme of all dharmas, the peaceful, desire-free dharmas. Please, teacher, consider me. I, named ..., from this time onwards, until reaching the essence of enlightenment, take refuge in the supreme of all assemblies, the noble Bodhisattvas, the irreversible Sangha. Thus, recite three times. For each refuge in the Three Jewels, recite "Consider me" once, and although the words for taking refuge in the Dharma are different from the others, it is done according to the ritual composed by Jowo (Atisha). The precepts after taking refuge are: the precepts that were previously taught in the context of the Lesser Person should also be spoken by the teacher here. Accumulating merit is: in the ritual of generating Bodhicitta, it is also said that one should perform prostrations and offerings at this time. The commentary says: one should do it by remembering the seven-branch offering, the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the previous and present spiritual friends. The offerings to the Lamas should also be known at the time of the previous offerings. The seven-branch offering is: to be done with either the "Good Conduct" or the "Entering the Path of Enlightenment" text. Training the mind is: from the "Lamp for the Path," it is said that one should first send forth the mind of loving-kindness, and then generate Bodhicitta by looking at suffering beings, so one should, as previously said, clearly establish the objects of loving-kindness and compassion. The actual ritual is: one should sit in front of the teacher with the right knee on the ground or squatting, with palms joined, and generate Bodhicitta. Furthermore, in the "Lamp for the Path," it says: "Without turning back, making a vow, one should generate the mind of enlightenment." And in the ritual, it also says: "Until the essence of enlightenment." Therefore, it is not just generating the mind to attain Buddhahood for the sake of others, but aiming at generating that mind, one will not give up until enlightenment is attained.

Since one vows to do so, one should generate this thought based on the ritual. If one cannot learn the precepts of aspiration, then one should not do it. If one merely generates the thought, "For the benefit of all sentient beings, I shall become a Buddha," through the ritual, then it is sufficient to do this regardless of whether one can learn the precepts of bodhicitta or not. For aspiration, if one takes the engaging mind with the ritual in this way, where both are possible, then it is never permissible not to study the precepts. To think that there is a difference between what can and cannot be done in the many vows rituals transmitted from Nagarjuna and Asanga is a great misunderstanding. Furthermore, some say that as a beginner, one should repeatedly take the vows through the ritual of taking the engaging vows, but because they do not understand the general precepts, and especially the root downfalls, they do not explain the difference of how to do it, which is to engage in something very meaningless. In the "Advice to Clear King" it also says, "If one cannot learn the precepts of giving and so on, merely generating the mind of enlightenment will also accomplish much merit." Based on this, the first chapter of the Stages of Meditation says, "Those who cannot learn all of the perfections in every way should also generate the mind of enlightenment by completely taking hold with skillful means for the sake of great fruit." Therefore, it is very clear that for those who do not study the precepts of giving and so on, it is permissible to generate the mind, but it is not permissible to take the vows. The ritual for taking the mind is: May all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions pay attention to me. May the teacher pay attention to me. I, named so-and-so, in this life and in other lives, with the roots of virtue of the nature of giving, the nature of ethics, and the nature of meditation that I have done, and the roots of virtue that I have caused to be done, and the roots of virtue that I rejoice in, just as the Buddhas, Arhats, Perfectly Complete Buddhas of the past, and the great Bodhisattvas who dwell on the great earth, generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. I, named so-and-so, also from this time forward, until enlightenment
