Until reaching the essence, I generate the supreme and perfect great Bodhicitta. May I liberate those beings who have not been liberated. May I free those who have not been freed. May I comfort those who have not been comforted. May I lead to Nirvana those who have not attained Nirvana. This should be recited three times. Although it is not explicitly stated that the refuge ritual and these two should be recited after the teacher, it is indeed necessary. These are the customs when there is a teacher. If a teacher is not found, what should be done? In the ritual for generating Bodhicitta composed by Jowo (Atiśa), it says: Thus, even without a teacher, the ritual for generating Bodhicitta oneself is as follows: One should remember the Tathagata Shakyamuni Buddha and all the Tathagatas of the ten directions, and after performing prostrations and offerings, one should make requests and abandon the term "teacher," and proceed with the order of taking refuge, etc., as before. One should act as it is said. The concluding ritual is that the teacher should explain the vows of aspirational Bodhicitta to the student. Secondly, in order to protect what has been attained from being lost, it is necessary to know the precepts, so they should be explained. This has two aspects: learning the causes for not losing Bodhicitta in this life, and learning the causes for not being separated from it in future lives. The first has four aspects: learning to remember the benefits in order to increase the joy and enthusiasm for Bodhicitta; learning to generate Bodhicitta six times in order to actually increase Bodhicitta; learning not to abandon sentient beings for whose benefit Bodhicitta is generated; and learning to accumulate the accumulations of merit and wisdom. The first is to contemplate the benefits of the mind of enlightenment by reading the sutras or listening to the lama. It is extensively explained in the Avatamsaka Sutra, so it should be consulted. Moreover, as previously quoted, it is said to be like the seed of all the Buddha's teachings, and like a summary because it gathers all the practices and aspirations of the Bodhisattvas. Thus, although there is an infinite number of extensive explanations of the branches, everything is gathered in the summary, so just as the summary is its compilation, all the paths of the Bodhisattva

This is a summary of the key points. Regarding the benefits of the Bodhisattva vow, since it is due to the aspiration mind, first, for generating a firm Bodhicitta, two benefits are declared: becoming a supreme field of merit and fully possessing harmless merit. First, as it is said, "The world, together with gods and humans, will pay homage." As it is said, as soon as Bodhicitta arises, one becomes the source of merit for all sentient beings; as it is said, as soon as Bodhicitta arises, even Arhats and great beings are overwhelmed from the perspective of lineage, thus becoming a teacher or superior; even if one performs a small virtuous deed, it produces limitless results, so it is a field of merit, and all the worlds rely on it, like the earth. As it is said, one becomes like a father to all beings. Second, twice the number of guardians who protect a Chakravartin king will constantly protect one, so that even when one is asleep, drunk, or heedless, Yakshas or non-human beings who are permanently dwelling there cannot harm one. The words of secret mantras and vidya mantras, which pacify epidemics, harms, and contagious diseases, even those that have not been accomplished in the hands of sentient beings, will come into this person's hands and be accomplished, what need is there to mention those that have already been accomplished? This shows that if Bodhicitta is firm, activities such as pacification will also be easily accomplished, so for accomplishing common siddhis, if one has this, it will be quick. Wherever one dwells, there will be no fear or things that cause fear, famine and harm from non-human beings will not occur, and those that have already occurred will be pacified. Even after death, there will be little harm and naturally no illness, and even if harm occurs, it will not last long or be severe, and when engaging in activities such as teaching the Dharma for the benefit of sentient beings, the body will not be tired, and one will not be forgetful or have diminished mental strength. Those who abide in the Bodhisattva lineage will naturally have fewer unfortunate rebirths, and if one generates Bodhicitta, then the unfortunate rebirths of body and mind will become very few. Possessing patience and delight, one can endure harm caused by others, and one will not harm others, and even if one sees others harming others, one will be very unhappy, as well as anger, jealousy, deceit, and concealment, etc.
