Regarding clothing. Furthermore, just as seeing that planting good seeds yields abundant and high-quality crops leads to cherishing fertile land, similarly, if one is certain that planting seeds of generosity and the like in the field of sentient beings will accomplish all temporary and ultimate well-being, then cherishing will arise. Therefore, one should contemplate these things. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: 'From sentient beings and the Victorious Ones, the attainment of Buddhahood is similar. Why is it that one shows respect to the Victorious Ones, but not to sentient beings?' And so on. Furthermore, killing sentient beings leads to the three lower realms, while liberating from killing leads to the higher realms and also to longevity within them. And also, taking what is not given, giving enjoyment, generating hatred, and cultivating love and compassion also lead to the lower and higher realms, and so on. In particular, generating bodhicitta with these as the object, and accomplishing actions for the sake of these beings, Buddhahood also depends on this. Relying on sentient beings, generosity and so forth are perfected, as it is said in the verses that please sentient beings, one should think in this way. In the Bodhicittavivarana, it is also said: 'The desired and undesired fruits of the world's higher and lower realms arise from benefiting and harming sentient beings. If, by relying on sentient beings, one can attain the unsurpassed state of Buddhahood, then what enjoyment of gods and humans, what power of Brahma and Indra, and what those relied upon by the protectors of the world, are not led by merely benefiting sentient beings in these three realms? What is there to be surprised about? The reality of the various sufferings in the minds of hell-beings, animals, and hungry ghosts, whatever sentient beings experience, arises from harming sentient beings. Hunger, thirst, mutual beatings, and the suffering of torment, difficult to reverse and without end, are the result of harming sentient beings.' Thus it is said. The reason why the Hearers (Śrāvakas) have inferior results is that they did not exert great effort for the benefit of sentient beings. The Buddhas attained the ultimate result because they exerted great effort for the benefit of sentient beings. Thinking about this, it is said that one should not be attached to one's own benefit even for a moment. As it says in that very text: 'Being without attachment to sentient beings is...'
