It should be understood in the mind. As it says in the First Stage of Meditation: 'That which is initially sought for the benefit of all sentient beings to become Buddhas is the aspiration of the mind of enlightenment. That which subsequently takes vows and enters the accumulations is the mind of engagement.' Because it is said that way. Although there are many refutations to this, they are not elaborated here. Second, relying on the treatises of Shantideva to practice, there are three points. Thinking about the benefits of exchanging self and others and the faults of not exchanging: As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: 'Whoever wishes to quickly protect themselves and others should practice the secret and supreme exchange of self and others.' It also says: 'All the happiness in the world comes from the desire for the happiness of others, and all the suffering in the world comes from the desire for one's own happiness. What need is there to say more? Children only benefit themselves, while the capable ones act for the benefit of others. Observe the difference between these two. If one does not truly exchange one's own happiness for the suffering of others, one will not only fail to become a Buddha, but there will also be no happiness even in samsara.' As it is said, cherishing oneself is the door to all downfalls, and cherishing others is the source of all perfections. If one becomes accustomed to the thought of exchanging self and others, one will be able to generate (bodhichitta). Just as one used to be afraid of even hearing the name of one's enemy, but later, after making peace, one would be very unhappy if they were not there. Because the mind follows habituation, looking at others as oneself and looking at oneself as others can also arise if one becomes accustomed to it. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: 'One should not retreat from difficulties, for by the power of habituation, even the one whose name one fears, one will be unhappy without them.' It also says: 'Giving one's body to others is not difficult.' If one thinks that the body of others is not one's own body, how can one generate the same thoughts towards them as one does towards oneself? This body is also made of the essence of one's parents' blood, and even though it is made of parts of others' bodies, just as one generates self-grasping due to the power of past habituation, if one becomes accustomed to cherishing the bodies of others as one's own, it can also arise. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: 'Therefore, how do you grasp at the drops of others' essence and blood?'

As it was done. Similarly, make others accustomed to it. Thus it is said. In this way, by contemplating well the benefits and drawbacks, from the depths of your heart, enthusiasm arises for meditating on it, and through habituation, it is also seen that it can be generated. The stages of meditating on the method of exchanging self and others are: What is called exchanging self and others, and what is said, "Make self as others and others as self," is not training to generate the thought that others are me, and that their eyes, etc., are mine, but rather exchanging the positions of the two minds of cherishing oneself and abandoning others, generating the mind of cherishing others as oneself and abandoning oneself as others. Therefore, what is said about exchanging one's own happiness and the suffering of others is also to regard cherishing oneself as an enemy, thereby preventing the extreme pursuit of one's own happiness; to regard cherishing others as a virtue, thereby preventing the abandonment of the suffering of others, and to dedicate oneself greatly to eliminating it. In short, it is to disregard one's own happiness and engage in eliminating the suffering of others. When training this mind, there are two obstacles: Believing that the basis of happiness and suffering for oneself and others, self and others, are established as separate entities like blue and yellow; then, regarding the happiness and suffering that depend on this, one thinks, "This is mine, so it should be accomplished or eliminated." "This is others'," and so it is abandoned. The antidote to this is that self and others are not inherently divided into separate entities, but are mutually dependent, so the thought of others arises for oneself, and the thought of self arises for others, just like this mountain and that mountain. For example, for this mountain, from this side the thought of that mountain arises, but if one goes to that mountain, the thought of this mountain arises. Therefore, no matter what one looks at, the thought of blue arises, which is different from the thought of other colors not arising. In this way, it is also said in the Compendium of Trainings: Having become accustomed to the equality of self and others, The mind of enlightenment will become stable. Self and others are interdependent, Like this shore and that shore, they are false. From one side, it is not the other shore, Depending on what, it turns into this shore. If self-nature is not established, Depending on what does it turn into other? It is said that it is merely established depending on what is being regarded, and there is no establishment of one's own entity. Furthermore, the suffering of others makes oneself
