It is said that one should take and protect it. In general, even if one has not developed the experience as mentioned before, if one knows the practices of the Mahayana and has firm faith in the Mahayana, one can first take the vow of generating bodhicitta and the precepts through rituals, and then train the mind in bodhicitta. For example, in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, one first takes the precepts and the mind, and then in the section on meditation of the six perfections, the methods of training the mind in bodhicitta are explained in detail. However, it seems that in order to make them suitable vessels, one must first train many minds, such as contemplating the benefits and the seven limbs, and taming the mind through refuge, and after understanding the practices, generating the desire to protect them. Therefore, when traveling the path, although it seems that only the realization of emptiness becomes more and more extensive after being practiced, similarly, bodhicitta should also be well cultivated and become more and more excellent, so that one can travel the path, but this does not even seem to be mentioned. This is the only path traveled by all the Buddhas. From the twenty-two types of bodhicitta taught in the Manang of the Paramita Teachings, one should learn from the explanations of how the great chariot masters traveled the path with these bodhicittas. Third, cultivating higher intention: In the end, after cultivating love and compassion in this way, one thinks: Alas! These poor and lovely beings are so lacking in happiness and tormented by suffering. One should think: How can I make them attain happiness and be liberated from suffering? Even just taking on the burden of saving them with words is a mind training. This was also mentioned slightly when repaying kindness, but what is said here is that it is not enough to have love and compassion that only hopes that they will attain happiness and be free from suffering. In order to show that one must generate love and compassion that can lead beings to the thought that I will accomplish their benefit and happiness. These are not only in the nature of a session, but in all behaviors such as between sessions, one must remember and practice regularly, so that there can be great effect. As it is said in the Middle Stages of Meditation: Compassion, whether in meditation or in all behaviors, should be constant.

It should be practiced constantly for all sentient beings, as it is said. Compassion is just an example; it is the same for whatever object or aspect is cultivated. The great scholar Chandragomin also said: The tree of the mind has existed since beginningless time, moistened by the sap of afflictions' frost. It cannot be made into a delicious thing. How could drops of virtue's water change it? As it is, just as pouring a few drops of sugarcane juice onto a large neem tree with an extremely bitter taste cannot make it sweet, so too, for the mindstream that has been steeped in the bitter taste of afflictions since beginningless time, cultivating virtues such as love or compassion for a short time will not change it in any way. As it is said, therefore, it needs to be cultivated constantly. Second, cultivating the mind that strives for enlightenment: Through the sequence of instructions explained earlier, one recognizes that enlightenment must be attained for the benefit of others, and thus generates the desire to attain it. However, that alone is not enough. As explained earlier in the context of taking refuge, one must first increase faith as much as possible by contemplating the qualities of body, speech, mind, and activity. Then, because faith is said to be the basis of aspiration, one must generate from the depths of one's heart the desire to attain those qualities, and be certain that it is indispensable to attain omniscience for one's own benefit as well. Although there are many causes for the arising of bodhicitta, generating it oneself with compassion as the main factor is particularly special, as stated in the Prajñā-mudrā-samādhi, and recorded in the first chapter of the Stages of Meditation. Third, identifying the fruit of cultivation: bodhicitta. The general characteristic is as in the meaning of the verse from the Ornament for Clear Realization quoted earlier. The divisions follow the Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra, as stated in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: The difference between wishing to go and going, how is it known? Likewise, the wise should know the difference between these two in sequence. Thus, it speaks of the two: aspirational and actual bodhicitta. Although there appear to be many different views on this, the aspiration is to think, "May I become a Buddha for the benefit of sentient beings," or "I shall make sentient beings become Buddhas." Regarding practices such as generosity, one may or may not train in them, but as long as one has not taken vows, it is always aspirational bodhicitta. From the moment one takes vows, that mind becomes the actual
