If we speak from the perspective of manifestation, if the mother does not rely on her son, who else can she rely on? And if the son cannot liberate the mother from that fear, who else will liberate her? Therefore, one must liberate her from it. Similarly, sentient beings who have been our mothers are also disturbed by the demons of afflictions, their minds unable to remain calm, and they lose control over their knowledge, becoming mad. They are deprived of the eye that sees the path of higher realms and definite goodness. They have no guide in the form of a true spiritual friend. With each moment, they are deceived by misdeeds, and they stumble with each step. In general, seeing the cycle of existence, and especially the precipice of the lower realms, the mother must rely on her son, and the son must take on the responsibility of rescuing the mother. Thinking in this way, one should repay the kindness of liberating oneself from the cycle of existence. The Compendium of Trainings says: "Bewildered by afflictions, dull-witted and confused, on the path of many precipices, stumbling with each step, self and others are the constant source of sorrow, the sufferings of beings are the same." Having seen it in this way, one should not find fault with others, and if one sees even a single good quality, one should regard it with wonder. Although it is said in this way, here too, one can add the aspect of being pitiful. Secondly, with regard to actually generating that mind, there are three aspects. Among them, regarding the cultivation of loving-kindness: The object of loving-kindness is: sentient beings who do not possess happiness. The aspect is: "How wonderful it would be if they were to encounter happiness," the thought of wishing them to encounter happiness, and the thought of bringing them into contact with happiness. The benefit is: The King of Samadhi Sutra says: "In hundreds of thousands of millions of lands, however many immeasurable offerings, with which one constantly makes offerings to the excellent ones, cannot match the number of thoughts of loving-kindness." This means that the object is extremely vast, and constantly making offerings in lands at the edge of the world generates far greater merit than that. Also, in the Array of Manjushri's Pure Land, it says: "In the northeast direction, there is a pure land adorned with a thousand million worlds of the Buddha Great Powerful King, called 'That Place,' where sentient beings possess happiness, just like a monk entering cessation. Practicing celibacy there for hundreds of thousands of millions of years does not generate as much merit as generating a mind of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings in this world for even the duration of a finger snap. The latter generates far more merit than the former, let alone abiding in it day and night?"

It is said in the explanation, and also in the Ratnavali: "Even if you give food to three hundred Brahmins three times a day, it cannot match the merit of a moment of loving-kindness. Gods and humans will become loving, and they will also be protected, have peace of mind, have much happiness, be free from harm from poison and weapons, obtain benefits without effort, and be reborn in the Brahma world. Even if they do not become liberated, they will obtain the eight qualities of loving-kindness." It is said that if there is loving-kindness, gods and humans will be loving and naturally gather. The Victorious One also defeated the hordes of demons with the power of loving-kindness, so it becomes the best of protection. Therefore, even if it is difficult to arise, one must strive. In the Siksamuccaya, it is said that one should contemplate with all one's mind the verses that show the cultivation of loving-kindness and compassion that arise from the Suvarnaprabhasa Sutra, and even utter them in words and cultivate them. That verse is: "By the great drum sound of the Suvarnaprabhasa Sutra, in this three thousand worlds, may the suffering of the lower realms, the suffering of Yama, and the suffering of poverty be pacified!" and so on. The order of cultivating loving-kindness is: first cultivate it towards friends, then towards neutral people, then towards enemies, and then gradually cultivate it towards all sentient beings. The way to cultivate it is: just as compassion arises when one repeatedly thinks about how sentient beings suffer from suffering, one should also repeatedly think about how sentient beings do not have happiness, both contaminated and uncontaminated, and how they lack happiness. When one becomes accustomed to this, the desire to be with happiness will naturally arise. One should also bring to mind various kinds of happiness and bestow them upon sentient beings. When cultivating compassion, the object of compassion is: sentient beings who suffer from any of the three kinds of suffering. The aspect is: the thought that they should be separated from those sufferings, the thought that they should be separated, and the thought that one should separate them. The order of cultivation is: first towards friends, then towards neutral people, and then towards enemies. When one can generate equanimity towards enemies as one does towards friends, one should gradually cultivate it towards all sentient beings in the ten directions. In this way, one should distinguish the objects of equanimity, loving-kindness, and compassion separately.
