These should also be received and practiced here. Among these, first, if one does not prevent the partiality of being attached to some sentient beings and hating others, and if one does not cultivate equanimity, then whatever arises, whether it is love or compassion, will arise with partiality. Because it will not arise based on an object without partiality, one should cultivate impartiality. Impartiality has three types: volitional impartiality, feeling impartiality, and immeasurable impartiality. Here, it is the last one. Within that, there is also one way of establishing that sentient beings are without afflictions such as attachment and aversion, and two ways of saying that one is free from attachment and aversion to sentient beings and the mind is equanimous. Here, it is the latter. The order of cultivating this is: because it is easy to arise, first, take as the object of focus a neutral person who has neither bestowed benefit nor caused harm, and then eliminate attachment and anger, and cultivate equanimity. If equanimity is achieved, then cultivate equanimity towards friends. The lack of equanimity towards them is due to distinguishing them with attachment and aversion, or due to the size of attachment. After achieving equanimity towards them, cultivate equanimity towards enemies. The lack of equanimity towards them is due to viewing them as completely incompatible and being hateful. After achieving equanimity towards them, cultivate equanimity towards all sentient beings. So, what should one cultivate towards these in order to abandon attachment and aversion? There are two: from the perspective of sentient beings, since all equally desire happiness and do not desire suffering, it is unreasonable to be close to some and bestow benefits, and to be distant from others and cause harm or not bestow benefits. From one's own perspective, since from beginningless time in samsara, there is no sentient being who has not been my relative hundreds of times, so one thinks, 'To whom should I be attached, and to whom should I be hateful?' As it is said in the 'Intermediate Stages of Cultivation'. Also, regarding attachment to relatives, as it is said in the 'Inquiry of the Daughter Moon Supreme': 'I have killed all of you in the past. You have also dissected and cut me in the past. All are mutually hostile and killing. How can you have thoughts of attachment?' As it is said. And, as previously explained in the context of the fault of uncertainty, one should contemplate the way in which all enemies and friends quickly change and go, so that both anger and attachment can be reversed.

Oh! This must be done based on distinguishing between enemies and friends, so there is no need to reverse the mind of enemies and friends. It prevents the thought of distinguishing between enemies and friends with attachment and aversion as the reason. To accomplish everything in a satisfactory manner, as it says in the "Middle Stages of Meditation": "Moisten the mindstream with the water of loving-kindness, treat it like barren land, and if you plant the seed of compassion, it will easily and completely grow. Then, nourish the mindstream with loving-kindness and meditate on compassion." The loving-kindness mentioned here refers to the satisfactory image of seeing all sentient beings as beloved children. By meditating on equanimity, the selfishness that is unbalanced by attachment and aversion is pacified. After being tamed like a good field, moisten it with the water of loving-kindness, which is seen as satisfactory, and if you plant a strong seed of compassion, great compassion will easily arise. It is crucial to realize this. There are three points to this, among which, contemplating the mother: Since samsara has no beginning, one's own birth also has no beginning, therefore birth and death continue. In samsara, there is no such thing as not having taken this body, not having been born in this place, and not having been a relative such as a mother. As quoted from "The Essence of Earth": "From a long time ago, it is difficult for me to see where you have not been born, have not gone, and have not died. From a long time ago, it is difficult for me to see which sentient being has not been your father, mother, brother, sister, teacher, Khenpo, Lama, or a position like a Lama." Moreover, not only has it not been done in the past, but there are also infinite things that will not be done in the future. Thinking in this way, strive to seek a firm conviction in the fact that you have not been a mother. If this thought arises, then it is easy to generate remembering kindness, etc. If it does not arise, there is no basis for remembering kindness, etc. Meditating on remembering kindness: After contemplating all sentient beings as mothers, first contemplate the mother of this life, as Potowa said, so that it arises quickly. Clearly visualize the image of the mother in front of you, and think: Not only now, but from beginningless samsara, she has been my mother countless times! Think like this several times.
