In the time before that was done, protecting from all harm, accomplishing all benefit and happiness. Especially in this life, first holding for a long time in the womb, then at the time of birth, a soft, downy fuzz clinging to the warmth of the skin, playing on the tips of ten fingers, offering milk, tasting food with the mouth, wiping away mucus with the mouth, wiping away impurities with the hands, nurturing with various means without weariness. Moreover, in times of hunger and thirst giving food and drink, in times of cold giving clothes, in times of poverty giving wealth that one would not readily use oneself. These things were not easily obtained, but were given after searching with great effort, mixed with sin, suffering, and bad words. When suffering such as illness befalls the child, one would rather die oneself than have the child die, rather be sick oneself than have the child be sick, rather suffer oneself than have the child suffer, thinking and resolving this from the depths of one's heart, and striving to eliminate that suffering. In short, with all one knows and is capable of, one accomplishes whatever benefit and happiness there may be, focusing single-mindedly on ways to eliminate harm and suffering. When, having meditated in this way, a mind of gratitude that is more than mere words arises, then one should also recognize other friends such as the father and meditate in this way. Then one should also recognize intermediate beings and meditate. When a mind like that of a friend arises towards them, then one should also recognize enemies and meditate. When a mind like that of a mother arises towards them, one should first send loving-kindness to all sentient beings in the ten directions, then gradually expand the scope and meditate. Meditating on repaying kindness is: In this way, having transmigrated through births and deaths, it is only because we do not recognize them, otherwise, my kind mothers are suffering and without refuge, and if we abandon them and seek to liberate ourselves from samsara, there is nothing more shameful than that. As it says in "A Letter to a Student": "Relatives are caught in the ocean of samsara, appearing as if fallen into an abyss, yet having forgotten those whom we do not recognize due to transmigrating through births and deaths, if one seeks to liberate oneself alone, there is nothing more shameless than that." Therefore, abandoning such kind ones is not fitting even for the base, so how could it be in accordance with my own conduct? Thinking in this way, one takes on the burden of repaying kindness. As it says in that very text: "A child in the lap is incapable of even excreting, whose milk...

Drinking milk with the strength of loving-kindness, who would be willing to abandon those who have toiled much and relied on loving-kindness, even if they were extremely base? Who, having found and dwelled in this moment in their heart, who has taken it with loving care, abandoning those afflictions, leaving suffering helpless here, who would be willing to become a base and vile being? Thus it is said. In the praise of limitless qualities, it is also said: Those sentient beings who are blinded by ignorance, with minds deteriorated in wisdom, those who have become fathers and sons, who have served me with loving-kindness and bestowed benefits, to abandon them and attain liberation alone is not my way. Therefore, you made aspirations to ensure that helpless beings would certainly attain liberation. Thus it is said. So, how should one repay kindness? Even if one's own mother has obtained some amount of happiness and wealth in samsara, she has not been deceived by all of them. Therefore, I, in the past, having been wounded by the bewilderment of the demon of afflictions, have already caused severe wounds, like applying corrosive agents such as alkaline salt to the wound, inflicting various sufferings again on those who are naturally suffering, those who have bestowed benefits with loving-kindness, one should repay them with the bliss of liberation and nirvana, one should repay kindness in this way. As it is said in the Essence of the Middle Way: Furthermore, in the past, bewildered by the demon of afflictions, I, like applying corrosive agents to a wound, made the suffering patient even more miserable. In other lives, whoever has bestowed benefits with loving-kindness and service, for them, what else is there to repay other than nirvana? Thus it is said. Compared to the burden of the ocean and Mount Meru, ingratitude is a greater burden, while gratitude is considered a place praised by the wise. As the verses of the Dragon King Drum Sound say: The ocean and Mount Meru, and the earths are not my burden, but ingratitude is my great burden. Whoever's mind is not rough, is grateful and feels the kindness, and does not waste the kindness, such people are greatly praised by the wise. Thus it is said. In short, one's own mother loses her memory, is mentally disordered, like a blind person without a guide, stumbling at every step, heading towards a terrifying cliff.
