Furthermore, mindfulness arises from mindfulness, and remembering kindness arises from seeing others as oneself, totaling seven. Here, there are two parts: generating certainty in the order, and actually training in the sequential practices. The first part has two aspects: explaining that the root of the Mahayana path is compassion, and how other causes and effects transform into its causes and results. The first part has three sections: First, the important thing is that if the mind is moved by great compassion, then in order to liberate all sentient beings from samsara, one will definitely make a vow; if compassion is weak, one will not act in this way, so carrying the burden of liberating all beings depends on it; and if one does not carry this burden, one cannot be considered a Mahayana practitioner, so compassion is important at the beginning. As it is also said in the Sutra of Inexhaustible Intelligence: "Venerable Sharadvatiputra, moreover, the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas is inexhaustible. Why is that? Because it is the precursor. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, for example, the outgoing and incoming breath is the precursor of the life force of a person. Similarly, the great compassion of the Bodhisattva is the precursor of the perfect accomplishment of the Great Vehicle." And also in the Gaya Gori Sutra: "Manjushri, what is the beginning of the conduct of the Bodhisattvas? What is the dwelling place?" Manjushri replied: "Son of the gods, the beginning of the conduct of the Bodhisattvas is great compassion. The dwelling place is sentient beings." Thus it is. Having made such a vow, if one does not train in the vast accumulation of the two accumulations, one sees that it cannot be accomplished, so one enters the vast accumulation of difficult practices, therefore it is the basis for entering into practice. The important thing in the middle is that, once such a mind has arisen and entered, because the number of sentient beings is vast and their actions are evil, and what needs to be trained is extremely difficult and limitless, and the time required is immeasurable, seeing these things, one becomes discouraged and falls into the Lesser Vehicle. Therefore, it is not just a matter of generating great compassion once, but of becoming accustomed to increasing it, so that one does not look at one's own happiness and suffering, and does not tire of benefiting others, thereby easily perfecting all the accumulations. As it is said in the First Stage of Meditation: "Thus, moved by great compassion, the Bodhisattvas do not look at themselves, but are extremely
