Also in meaning, whatever mind for the benefit of sentient beings that does not arise, this special quality of the jewel of the mind, a wondrous thing is born that has never existed before. It is said, "Where is there virtue equal to that? Where is there a friend like that? Where is there merit like that?" It is said, "To whomever that noble jewel of the mind, the Bodhicitta, is born, I prostrate to that body." It is said, "The sacred Dharma is like extracting the essence of butter from churned milk." It is said, because it is the supreme instruction of extracting the essence of the scriptures. Therefore, although the glorious Atisha held the view of Madhyamaka, and the master of Serling held the view of the mind-only true appearance, he attained it by relying on the Bodhicitta in his heart. If one who understands the essence of the scriptures looks at the liberation biography of holding the Lamas as the most kind, then there will be a great understanding of the essence of the path. If one strives for this and a non-artificial one arises, then even giving a small amount of food to a crow held by it will go into the number of Bodhisattva's conduct. If that is not there, even if giving by filling three thousand worlds with jewels, it will not be included in the Bodhisattva's conduct. Similarly, from ethics to wisdom, and meditating on deities, and meditating on channels, winds, bindus, etc., are not included in the Bodhisattva's conduct.

Endowed. If one is endowed with immeasurable merit, one desires to dispel the immeasurable discomfort of each and every sentient being. What need is there to mention the desire to accomplish the immeasurable qualities of each and every one? Thus it is said. Other virtues are like water trees, which bear fruit and then perish. The tree of bodhicitta always bears fruit, so it never diminishes but always increases. Thus it is said. Secondly, how that mind arises is divided into four: how it arises depending on what causes, the order of cultivating the mind of bodhi, the measure of arising, and the manner of taking it with rituals. The first is divided into three, of which the manner of arising from four conditions is: based on seeing or believing the inconceivable power of the Buddhas or Bodhisattvas, and relying on hearing, thinking that the bodhi in which one abides and enters is of great power, one generates the mind. Even without such seeing or hearing, when listening to the teachings based on unsurpassed bodhi, one generates the mind by admiring the wisdom of the Buddha. Even without hearing the Dharma, when seeing that the Bodhisattva's sacred Dharma is about to decline, one thinks that the existence of such Dharma will dispel the suffering of immeasurable sentient beings, so in order to make the Bodhisattva's Dharma last long, I must generate the mind, and one generates the mind by thinking like this. Even if one does not see the Dharma declining, in this evil age when delusion, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, jealousy, and stinginess are rampant, it is difficult to find even the bodhicitta of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, what to say of generating the mind for unsurpassed bodhi. If I generate the mind for a while, others will also become like that, and one generates the mind by seeing that it is difficult to generate the mind. These are the four. The way the mind arises is that, as it is said, one generates the great bodhicitta, so it is the arising of the desire to attain bodhi. What causes are made, the first is that one sees or hears miraculous and wonderful things and has a strange thought, and therefore thinks that I should attain such bodhi. The second is that one hears the qualities of the Buddha from the Dharma speaker, and first generates faith, and then generates the desire to attain them. The third is that one cannot bear the decline of the Great Vehicle teachings, so one generates the desire to attain the wisdom of the Buddha.
