That which the earth upholds the world, such is the nature of the great ones, without any self-interest. They are solely devoted to the taste of benefiting and bringing happiness to the world. Thus it is. Seeing beings tormented by suffering, one who hurries for their sake is called a person, and also called wise. It is said in that very text: "The world is obscured by clouds of ignorance, beings are confused and bewildered. Seeing them helplessly falling into the blazing fire of suffering. Like fire blazing on the head, whoever strives with anxious mind. Here, those are the persons, and those are also the wise." Thus it is. Therefore, it is the source of all happiness for oneself and others. The medicine that dispels all decline. The great path traversed by all wise beings. Seeing, hearing, remembering, and touching also transform into nourishment for all beings. Entering for the sake of others, one's own benefit is fulfilled without exception, possessing such skillful means, one can enter the Great Vehicle. Alas! Thinking, "I have well obtained this," I shall enter this supreme Great Vehicle with whatever ability I have as a person. Moreover, as it is said in the 'Compendium of Perfections': "The supreme vehicle of pure wisdom and manifest realization, arises from the omniscience of all great sages. It is like the eye of the worlds, like the light of the rising sun with its radiant light." As it is said, having seen the qualities of the Great Vehicle from various doors, one should generate great reverence and enter it. Thus, cultivating the mind in the stages of the path of a great person has three aspects: showing that the entrance to the Great Vehicle is solely through the generation of bodhicitta, the manner of how to generate that mind, and the manner of learning the practice after generating bodhicitta. The first is: If one wishes to enter the Great Vehicle in this way, then one might think, "From which door should I enter?" To that, the Victorious Ones have spoken of two Great Vehicles: the Great Vehicle of the Perfections and the Great Vehicle of Secret Mantra, but there is no other Great Vehicle besides these. Whichever of these two one enters, the entrance is solely the mind of enlightenment (bodhicitta). Whenever that arises in the mindstream, even if nothing else has arisen, one is established as a Great Vehicle practitioner. And whenever one is separated from that, even if one has realization of emptiness, and so on.

Whatever qualities one may have, one will fall into the state of Śrāvakas and the like, and one will degenerate from the Mahāyāna. This is stated in many Mahāyāna treatises and is also established by reasoning. Therefore, entering the Mahāyāna in the first place is established by merely generating that mind [of bodhicitta]. Later, leaving the Mahāyāna is also established by merely being separated from it. Therefore, the Mahāyānist goes and returns according to whether that mind is present or absent. As it is also said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "The moment the mind of enlightenment is born, in an instant, those miserable beings bound in the prison of samsara are called the sons of the Sugatas." And: "Today I am born into the Buddha family, and have become a son of the Buddhas." It is said that as soon as bodhicitta is generated, one immediately becomes a son of the Buddhas. In the liberation narrative of the noble Maitreya, it is also said: "Son of good family, just as a diamond jewel, even if broken, surpasses all excellent gold ornaments and does not abandon the name of diamond jewel, and also completely reverses all poverty. Son of good family, similarly, the diamond jewel of generating the mind for omniscience, even if lacking diligence, surpasses all the gold ornaments of the qualities of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and does not abandon the name of Bodhisattva, and also completely reverses all the poverty of samsara." It is said that even if one has not trained in conduct, if one has that mind, one is called a Bodhisattva. The protector Nāgārjuna also said: "If you and this world wish to attain the unsurpassed enlightenment, the root of that is bodhicitta, which should be as stable as the king of mountains." And in the Vajrapāṇi empowerment tantra, it is also said: "Great Bodhisattva, this great and vast, very profound, difficult to fathom, and more secret than secret maṇḍala of great dhāraṇī mantras, which should not be shown to sinful beings, Vajrapāṇi, you have spoken something very rare. If this has not been heard before, to what kind of beings should this be explained?" Vajrapāṇi said: "Mañjuśrī, those who have entered into the practice of bodhicitta, and when their bodhicitta is accomplished, at that time, Mañjuśrī, the Bodhisattva's
