And the near afflictions such as shamelessness and recklessness, forgetfulness and non-alertness, are obstacles that hinder the path to virtue. Therefore, recognizing the faults, rely on the antidotes and gradually weaken their power, and get used to it. The faults are: In the "Letter to a Friend" it says: "Excitement and regret, malice and drowsiness, sleep and desire, and doubt, these five obscurations are like thieves who steal the wealth of virtue, know that." And in the "Encouragement of Special Intention" it also says: "Whoever delights in sleep and drowsiness, phlegm, wind, and bile, these are predominant in his body, and his humors will be completely disturbed. Whoever delights in drowsiness and sleep, his stomach is impure due to bad food, his body is heavy, his complexion is not good, and his speech is not clear." And "Whoever delights in drowsiness and sleep, he is ignorant and his interest in the Dharma diminishes, the child completely loses all merits, the white diminishes and goes into darkness." Thus, many faults are spoken of. In the "Mindfulness Sutra" it says: "The one basis of all afflictions is laziness, wherever it is. Wherever there is one laziness, there is no Dharma at all." And in the "Collection Sutra" it says: "Those who are associated with carelessness are foolish ordinary people who have lost their minds. Just as a merchant protects his wealth, the wise should be mindful." And in the "Jataka Tales" it says: "Even for the sake of the power of the gods, it is better to abandon shame and do things that contradict the Dharma in one's heart, than to carry a clay pot, wear ragged clothes, and see the enemy come into one's home." And in the "Letter to a Friend" it says: "Power, body, and mindfulness are the only path to liberation, as taught by the Sugata. One should strive to guard it, for when mindfulness is lost, all Dharma will be destroyed." And in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life" it says: "Even those who are learned, faithful, and diligent, if they lack alertness, will be stained with faults and filled with the filth of downfall." Thus it is said. Thus, even if one cannot prevent afflictions and near afflictions, one should not support afflictions, not
