It should be like ripples on water, not like drawing on stone. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: "The mind is like water, earth, and stone. Know that drawings are made on them in that way. Among them, for those with afflictions, the first is superior, the last is inferior. For those who desire Dharma, it is the opposite." As it is said, in the aspect of Dharma, it should be the opposite of that. It also says in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: "I should cling to this, hold a grudge and wage war. Such afflictions, except for those that destroy afflictions. Even if I am burned and killed, even if my head is cut off, I can endure it. But I will never submit to the enemy of afflictions." As it is said. Geshe Phuchungwa also said: "Even if I am overwhelmed by afflictions, I will grit my teeth from below." When Potowa heard this, he said: "If that's the case, quickly stop it." Ordinary enemies, even if driven away once, will occupy other places and gain strength, and then come back to attack again. Afflictions are not like that. If afflictions can be eradicated from the root in the continuum once, they will not go to other places, nor will they come back again. However, we do not strive to eliminate afflictions, so that's why it is like this. As it says in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: "Even if you drive out an ordinary enemy from the country, he will still rely on other lands, gather strength and return. Afflictions are not like that enemy. Afflictions, afflictions, with the eye of wisdom, eliminate them from your own mind. Where will they go? Where will they rely to harm me? Weak me, I have no diligence." As it is said. Nyukrumpa said: "As soon as afflictions arise, don't be lazy, quickly counteract them with antidotes. If you can't counteract them, get up and set up a mandala and offerings, offer them to the lama and yidam, pray, focus on them, and recite the mantra of wrathful deities, and they will slowly disappear." Langri Tangpa also said: "Just by changing your seat or twisting your neck a few times, they will slowly disappear." He said: "He himself seems to be fighting with afflictions." Dewapa also said: "What else is there to do but to guard your own mind day and night?" If you do it like this, it might be effective. Jowo Rinpoche (Atisha) would meet many times a day,

Qung-ngom asked, "How are these afflictions to be abandoned?" Among them, the greatest fault and the most difficult to sever, and the basis for all other afflictions, is ignorance. Therefore, cultivate a great deal of dependent origination, and become skilled in entering and exiting samsara. If you become accustomed to this, then all wrong views, including the five views, will not arise. Hatred is the enemy that gives suffering in both this life and the next, and destroys all accumulated roots of virtue. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara, "There is no sin like hatred." Therefore, do not miss any opportunity to cultivate patience in all ways. If you do not do this, you will be very happy even in this life. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara, "Whoever strives to pacify anger, will be happy in this life and the next." Attachment is what makes all previously accumulated virtuous and non-virtuous actions powerful in accomplishing samsara, and increases its power. For those in the desire realm, this arises from experiencing the taste of feelings caused by the touch of enjoying objects. Therefore, cultivate a great deal of the impurity of external and internal things, and the faults of attachment to desirable qualities, and prevent them. As the great teacher Vasubandhu said, "The deer, the elephant, the butterfly, and the fish, the bee, these five are destroyed by five things. If one can destroy, then why, when constantly relying on five, will they not be destroyed?" Furthermore, cultivate attachment to the four things that are close to arising and difficult to sever: gain, fame, praise, and happiness, and strive to counteract the dislike of the opposite of these four. In general, cultivate the faults of samsara, and in particular, if the thought of death becomes crucial, it will be prevented. Pride is the chief obstacle to the arising of the path here, and the cause of becoming a servant and so on in the next life, so it should be abandoned. The way to abandon it is, as it is said in the Letter to a Friend, "Old age, death, suffering, separation, and likewise, actions are mine, I cannot transcend actions." Thinking like this again and again will not become arrogant through its antidote. If you gain certainty about truth, the Three Jewels, and the results of actions, then the proliferation of doubt will not arise. Furthermore, sleep, drowsiness, excitement, laziness, and carelessness
