Now, it is imperative to regard attachment as an enemy, strive to adopt remedies, and subdue afflictions. The vows one has undertaken must be completely purified. Palden Gonpawa, a disciple of Jowo Chempoche, also said: When asked by Sne'u Zurpa, where do your Geshes place the essence of all instructions? They would say, on clairvoyance or seeing the face of the tutelary deity. One should say, on becoming more and more certain of the law of karma and effect, and purely guarding the vows one has undertaken. Therefore, it must be understood that the accomplishment of practice also lies in afflictions, such as ignorance, becoming less and less. Even for fighting with others, which only produces sin and suffering in both this life and the next, they endure all the suffering during that time, even at the cost of their lives, and boast of wounds, etc., saying that this happened at that time. Therefore, it is very reasonable to endure hardships when striving to destroy afflictions. The Bodhicharyavatara says: If wounds caused by meaningless enemies are treated like ornaments on the body, then why should suffering harm me when truly striving to accomplish great meaning? Thus it is said. Therefore, fighting and defeating the enemy of afflictions is called a hero. Fighting other enemies is like attacking someone who will die naturally even if you don't kill them, like killing a corpse. The Bodhicharyavatara says: Overcoming all suffering, destroying enemies such as hatred, those victors are heroes, the rest are killing corpses. Thus it is said. Therefore, as it says in that very treatise: When in the midst of the afflictions, endure in a thousand ways, like a fox towards a lion, do not let the group of afflictions overwhelm you. Thus it is said. Do not let all aspects that are incompatible with the path overwhelm us, and overcome them. The stages of the path common to the middling person have been explained. I prostrate with reverence at the feet of the venerable and compassionate ones. Thus, due to long-term meditation on the faults of samsara from various angles, all conditioned phenomena are seen as a burning flame.

Therefore, with a mind filled with the desire for liberation, wanting to attain the liberation of pacifying afflictions and suffering, if one trains in the three trainings, one will attain the liberation of escaping from samsara. Although it is not like ascending to heaven and then falling back down, because eliminating faults and gaining merits are only one-sided, if one's own benefit is not fulfilled, then relying on that alone, the benefit of others will also become insignificant. In the end, one must be urged by the Buddha to enter the Mahayana, therefore, those with intelligence should enter the Mahayana from the beginning. As it is said in the Compendium of Perfections: "Those two vehicles that are powerless to accomplish the benefit of the world should be abandoned forever. In the vehicle taught by the King of Sages with compassion, those with the nature of benefiting others alone should enter." It is also said: "Counting happiness and unhappiness as like a dream, seeing beings blinded by the fault of ignorance, for the sacred task, delighting in benefiting others, why strive to accomplish one's own benefit?" Thus it is proclaimed. Just as oneself is sinking into the ocean of samsara, seeing beings also with their eyes of wisdom closed, unable to go in the direction of being free from fear, staggering in their steps, those who possess the lineage of the Buddhas, if they do not cherish others and do not strive for their benefit, it is not appropriate. As it is said in that very text: "For those whose eyes of wisdom are closed and whose steps are staggering, in the lineage of the Buddhas who accomplish the benefit of the world, what kind of person does not generate compassion? And does not strive to dispel their ignorance." Therefore, the happiness, majesty, and power of individuals should be in taking on the burden of others' benefit. Focusing only on one's own benefit is no different from animals. Therefore, the conduct of great beings is to be entirely devoted to the benefit and happiness of others. As it is said in the Letter to a Disciple: "Even livestock eat only a few blades of grass that are very easy to find. Even when tormented by extreme thirst, they happily drink when they find water. Here, the person who strives to accomplish the benefit of others is the majesty here, is the happiness, is the power of the person, is the supreme. The sun is great, riding a horse and moving, making light, and not fearing burdens."
