One should rejoice in renunciation. Repeatedly contemplating the faults of household life and the virtues of renunciation will strengthen the minds of those who have already renounced, and will plant and awaken good habits in those who have not yet renounced. Therefore, I will briefly explain its nature. As for householders, if they are rich, they suffer from the effort of protecting their wealth; if they are poor, they are exhausted from the suffering of seeking a livelihood, and there is no happiness. If they ignorantly consider this to be happiness, then it should be understood as the result of bad karma. As it says in the Jataka: "Never think of a house like a prison as happiness. Whether rich or poor, living in a house is a great disease. One is troubled by protecting, the other is exhausted by seeking. Whether rich or poor, wherever there is no happiness, to rejoice in that is ignorance, the ripening of sinful fruit." Therefore, holding many possessions and seeking without knowing contentment is not the conduct of a renunciate, otherwise there would be no difference from a householder. Furthermore, living in a house is contrary to the Dharma, so it is difficult to practice the Dharma there. As it says in the same text: "If you do household farming, you cannot avoid lying, and you cannot avoid being harsh when others do wrong. If you practice Dharma, household farming will be neglected; if you side with the household, how can Dharma be accomplished? The work of Dharma is very peaceful, while household affairs are accomplished by force. Therefore, since there is the fault of contradicting the Dharma, who would want to live in a house if they want to benefit themselves?" It also says: "Pride, arrogance, and ignorance are the nest of snakes, destroying the joy of perfect peace, the house that has become the abode of many unbearable sufferings. Who would live there like living in a hole?" Thus, repeatedly contemplating the faults of living in a house, one should aspire to renunciation. That is, aspiring to have coarse robes and a begging bowl, being content with alms, subduing one's own afflictions in solitude, and becoming an object of offering for others. As it says in the "Story of the Seven Young Women": "After the hair has been shaved, holding the rags from the dustpan, wishing for a solitary place to be one's home, when will it be like that? The yoke, no matter how much I look at it,

Looking on! When will I be able to hold an earthen bowl in my hand, begging from house to house without any reservations? When will I be able to be free from attachment to gains and respect, purify the mire of the thorns of afflictions, and become a place of generosity in the city? As it is said. Sleeping on a mattress made of grass, without a blanket, being content with coarse clothes and poor food, living under a tree on soft grass, living on the joy and happiness of the Dharma, longing to sleep in such a place: Rising from a pile of grass, when will I be without attachment to coarse clothes, sustaining my body with only poor food and drink? Like a parrot green under a tree, in the soft grass, enjoying the feast of the happiness of the present Dharma, when will I be able to sleep there? As it is said. Potowa said that the snow was accumulating on the roof, and tonight it was like what was said in the "Tale of the Seven Daughters," and he felt very happy. He said that there was nothing else he wanted to do except experience such a state. Living in a place rich in medicinal herbs and on the banks of a river, watching the arising and ceasing of the waves, thinking of one's own life and the waves as the same, cutting off the root of all evil views, the clinging to self, with discriminating wisdom, turning away from the pleasures of samsara, and repeatedly contemplating the world of containers and contents as illusory, longing for: When will I be able to live in a place rich in medicinal herbs on the banks of a river, watching the arising and ceasing of the waves, repeatedly watching the sentient world and the dwelling place as similar? When will I be able to cut off the view of the aggregates, which is the mother of all views, and not crave the pleasures of samsara? When will I be able to realize the world of causes and no causes, like dreams, mirages, illusions, clouds, and cities of gandharvas? As it is said. All of these are aspirations to do these things after becoming a renunciate. Chakawa said that if someone could live in a cave of asceticism, abiding by the conduct of a hermit, then the father would have raised his son. Sharawa also said that when a householder is busy with worldly affairs, wearing fine clothes...
