When those branches of the result are accomplished, the person who accumulates karma and experiences the result is selfless. As previously explained, from the branches of the cause of mere phenomena, the branches of the result of mere phenomena arise, and without understanding the way of cyclic existence, being ignorant of it and clinging to it as self, wanting oneself to be happy, therefore manifestly engaging in virtue and non-virtue with the three doors, thus again cycling. From the three afflictions arise two karmas, and from those arise seven sufferings, and from the seven also arise afflictions, and from those also cycle as before, thus the wheel of existence revolves continuously. The teacher Nagarjuna said: From the three arise two, from the two arise seven, from the seven also arise three, the wheel of existence, itself revolves again and again. Thinking about wandering in cyclic existence in such a way becomes the supreme means of renunciation. Those ripening karmas of virtue and non-virtue accumulated from immeasurable eons, which have not been ripened and have not been destroyed by antidotes, if nourished by present craving and grasping, then by its power wandering in happy and unhappy migrations. Although arhats have countless ripening karmas accumulated in the past when they were ordinary beings, if they gain firm conviction in the way of liberation from cyclic existence because they have no afflictions, then they will regard afflictions as enemies and strive to eliminate them. In this regard, the great spiritual friend Phuchungwa trained his mind on the twelve branches of dependent arising themselves, and also trained his mind on the ceasing and arising of the stages of the path. Furthermore, contemplating the reversal and progression of the twelve branches of the lower realms pertains to the scope of the small person. Subsequently, contemplating the reversal and progression of the twelve branches of the two higher realms pertains to the scope of the intermediate person. Thus, judging from one's own experience, one cultivates love and compassion for all sentient beings who have been one's mothers, wandering in cyclic existence through the twelve branches. Explaining how to train in the desire to attain Buddhahood for the sake of those beings and how to study its path falls within the scope of the great person. Fourth, to summarize those meanings: As previously explained, the origin of suffering, due to the power of karma and afflictions, cyclic existence is suffering.

Understanding how aggregates accumulate and, in particular, how the wheel of existence turns through the twelve links of dependent origination, and becoming familiar with this, is a supreme method for destroying the unbearable darkness of ignorance, the root of all decline; eliminating all wrong views that cling to the arising of inner and outer phenomena from causelessness and causes that are incompatible with causes; increasing the precious jewels of the treasury of the Buddha's teachings; knowing the nature of samsara as it is and inspiring the mind to enter the path of liberation with strong renunciation; and for those who have previously become accustomed to this, it is a noble means of awakening the habitual patterns for attaining the state of an arya. Thus, in the Sutra Requested by Strong Arms it says, "The path of dependent origination is the antidote to ignorance." And in the Salu Green Sutra it says, "If dependent origination is well seen, then all evil views that cling to the past, future, and present are averted." Master Nagarjuna said, "This dependent origination is the Victorious One's, the precious jewel of the treasury of the Buddha's teachings, it is profound." In the Vinaya Sutra it says, "The conduct of one of the supreme pair is to wander in the five realms from time to time. Having passed through these, they went to Jambudvipa (Earth) and spoke of their sufferings to the four assemblies. Those who dwell with some and do not like the celibate life of proximity are led by them, so that one of the supreme pair is seduced. The two also seduce them. In the teachings, they delight in celibacy and further understand its distinctions. Seeing this, the Teacher asked Ananda for the reasons, and Ananda stated the reasons. Since one like the supreme pair does not appear at all times, he taught to draw the five-part wheel of samsara in the doorway, with the twelve links of dependent origination drawn around it in forward and reverse order. Then the wheel of existence was drawn, and a painted image was sent to King Utrayana, with the twelve links of dependent origination drawn below in forward and reverse order. When the king received it, at dawn he sat in the lotus position, kept his body upright, and placed his mindfulness in the direction, contemplating the two aspects of dependent origination, and thus attained the state of an arya. Secondly, the measure of the arising of that intention is:
