Ananda, if some, even in a dream, see the stupa of the Tathagata and their minds are pleased, Ananda, the fruit of that root of virtue is Nirvana, and I say that it will reach the limit of complete Nirvana. And using the example of drawing water from a fish pond, he taught: Therefore, sons of good family, the root of virtue of offering to the Tathagata is endowed with great fruit and great benefit. Sons of good family, the root of virtue of offering to the Tathagata, placed in such a way, planted in a great field of merit, for those, even for a long time, even for hundreds of thousands of billions of kalpas, will not be exhausted. The fruit of all those roots of virtue is Nirvana, and Nirvana will be attained. Ananda, in order to understand the meaning, I have made this example. What is the meaning to be observed in it? Ananda, fish is the secret language of ordinary beings. Water is the secret language of generating roots of virtue towards the Tathagata. Thread is the secret language of the four objects of gathering.
