The term "rgya ba" refers to someone who cannot attain Buddhahood in this life. This person hopes to seize the clear light of death at the time of death and attain Buddhahood then. However, saying that one attains Buddhahood in the first bardo is very unreasonable, because the bardo is not established until the death process has stopped, which contradicts all standard scriptures. The death process must be placed within this life and the bardo, because the clear light of death can only be seized in this life, and no standard scripture mentions attaining Buddhahood in the clear light of death. Therefore, it is unreasonable. If this were the actual support for newly attaining the resultant Dharmakaya, it would be contradictory for the corpse to become an ordinary corpse. Furthermore, this support has no examples of whether or not it needs to be studied. Therefore, the so-called mixing death with the Dharmakaya is merely labeling a similarity as the Dharmakaya, and is not the actual Dharmakaya. Similarly, if one must take the characteristic body of the bardo at the end of the clear light of death, then even if one practices the path after seizing the bardo, one cannot achieve the supreme accomplishment on that support. For the first person, in order to substitute for others entering the bardo, he needs to accomplish the four Sambhogakayas through the path of wind and mind. The proofs for these accomplishments have already been explained elsewhere. For the latter two people, when the mind is clear before approaching death, all grasped phenomena should be relinquished without hesitation, without regard for fields of merit, and without attachment to anything. Confess and restrain from transgressions that violate vows, restore broken vows, and do not be concerned about dying. For those who are familiar with the instructions on death and the bardo, remember how these two become an inspiration for virtuous actions, and rejoice in death like a son returning home. Then, visualize oneself as the deity, and in front, visualize and offer to the mandala of the guru and yidam, and strongly pray to be able to merge death with the clear light and the bardo with the illusory body. The second type of person should, even before the signs of death arise at the time of death, repeatedly practice the method of gathering the life force into the central channel that they are most familiar with, and draw in the four emptinesses.

At the time of death, the method of arising as a celestial body, having special characteristics; and holding the emptiness of sleep; and the method of transforming the dream body into an illusory body, having special characteristics, should be practiced. As before, the throwing practice should be performed repeatedly. This practice should be cultivated extensively from the beginning. Then, examining the signs of death, the twenty gross signs of entering into luminosity should be understood as they appear in the "Discrimination." In brief, when earth dissolves into water, the external sign is that the body cannot move and becomes loose without being able to support itself. One feels as if the body is sinking into the earth, and the sound "Ah-then" arises. The internal sign is the appearance of a mirage-like experience. When water dissolves into fire, the external sign is that the mouth and nose become dry, and the tongue becomes short. The internal sign is the appearance of a smoke-like experience. When fire dissolves into wind, the external sign is that the temperature decreases, and the body's warmth contracts from the extremities. The internal sign is the appearance of a firefly-like experience. When the wind of conceptual thought dissolves into mind, the external sign is that the breath flows out long and cannot be drawn in. Even if drawn in slightly, it is short and rough. The internal sign is the appearance of a candle flame not moved by the wind. Then, the first appearance called "Emptiness" arises, like moonlight rising in a cloudless sky. Then, after that appearance dissolves, the appearance of increasing called "Very Emptiness" arises, like sunlight rising in a clear sky, and a red or reddish-yellow appearance arises. Then, after that appearance also dissolves, the appearance of near attainment called "Great Emptiness" arises, like a clear sky being covered by the darkness of twilight. Darkness appears, and memory also fades away. Then, when the unconsciousness of having gone into darkness awakens, the luminosity called "All Emptiness" arises, like the light of the sun and moon dispelling darkness, and a clear dawn sky free from blackness appears, which is the actual luminosity. Here, for the three emptinesses and luminosity, the external signs are smoke, fireflies, and candles, and a clear sky; the internal signs are white, red, black, and dawn-like appearances, both doing and not doing, but the latter is better. Because smoke and so on appear before the four emptinesses, as stated in many reliable scriptures.
