A Gradual Guide to the Profound Path of the Six Dharmas of Nāropa, Called Possessing Three Faiths. A Gradual Guide to the Profound Path of the Six Dharmas of Nāropa, Called Possessing Three Faiths. A Gradual Guide to the Profound Path of the Six Dharmas of Nāropa, Called Possessing Three Faiths, is presented herein. To the lotus feet of the venerable and holy guru, inseparable from Vajradhara, I prostrate with great reverence. Body, speech, and mind, and miraculous powers that accomplish all, Generating whatever is desired, and the power of qualities, The essence of the eight-powered Vajradhara, I bow to the feet of the glorious guru. A compilation of the essential points of the profound tantras, From the accomplished master Tilopa to Nāropa, The lineage passed down in succession, known as the Six Dharmas of Nāropa, Whose fame has spread widely in all directions. For the countless fortunate ones who strive on this path, Who ascend to the high state of liberation, The teachings of the lineage holders earnestly, Repeatedly urge, therefore this path will be explained here. Here, the profound instructions of the Six Dharmas of Nāropa, which are widely known, can be divided into two: the preliminaries for meditating on this path, based on what, and how to meditate on this path based on that. The first has two parts: the first preliminary, the common path of the Great Vehicle, and the uncommon preliminary of the Unsurpassed Vehicle. The first has two parts: it is shown that studying the common path is also necessary for this tradition, and the order of training the mind on that path. The first is: it is necessary to have the order of training on the common path of the Perfection Vehicle and the Mantra Vehicle for this path. The lamas of the Marpa lineage, such as Ngok, etc., In the Two Examinations, it says, "First, perform the sojong and give alms." Up to "After that, teach Madhyamaka." It is explained that the common precepts of the two Great Vehicles have been taught. This also appears in the meaning of the tantra. Jetsun Milarepa also said, "When guiding with the instructions for liberating from the perilous bardo, first take refuge and generate the mind of aspiration and engagement." At that time, it is also said, "The charnel ground is led by ghouls, and the yaks are connected and fall into the abyss." If you do not protect it as it is and only make promises, both the teacher and the student will fall into the abyss, and only see a little benefit.

If one enters, it is said to be the guide of the aggregates. Later, one receives the blessings of the Holy Mother and obtains the pith instructions. 'Liberation from the Perils of the Bardo' is also another name for these pith instructions, and the method of guidance is also universally common. In particular, Dharma Lord Gampopa, as stated in the 'Explanation of the Four Dharmas,' first cultivated the mindstream through the stages of the path of the three types of individuals. Therefore, some such as Dharma Lord Phagmo Drupa, in their guidance manuals for the Six Dharmas, do not show the method of guiding the common path. This is because it appears to be the custom of giving these pith instructions after guiding the group in the stages of the path, just as in the guidance manual of Yalong Monastery. Therefore, it is extremely important to emphasize guiding the common path beforehand. If this is done, the path will not go astray. Because this is a method of guidance that completes the essential points of both the Sutra and Tantra paths, it is a great characteristic of this tradition, and it must be understood in this way. Secondly, the stages of training the mind on that path: So, how should one train on the path common to both the Great Vehicles? It should be done according to the instructions of Jowo Rinpoche. First, one should properly rely on a qualified Great Vehicle spiritual friend with thought and action. This also shows the rarity and meaningfulness of leisure and endowment. Through training, a strong desire arises to take the essence of leisure and endowment. The supreme way to take the essence is to enter the Great Vehicle, and the gateway to entering the Great Vehicle is the mind of enlightenment. If one truly has the mind of enlightenment in their mindstream, then that Great Vehicle practitioner will not be artificial. If it is just words, then the Great Vehicle practitioner will also just be words. Therefore, a wise person should gradually eliminate the factors that are contrary to the mind of enlightenment, and thus generate a mind of enlightenment that is complete with qualities. Among these, first, if one does not turn the mind away from this life, then it is an obstacle to the path of both the Great and Small Vehicles. Therefore, one should remember death, that this life will not last long, and the ways in which one will wander in the lower realms after death, and thus turn the mind away from this life. Then, one should also well contemplate all the faults of samsara in order to turn away from the mind that craves the perfections of future lives, and thus liberate the mind.
