It is said to hold it in a guarding manner. Do not make it a form of looking from this side to that side, but do it as if the mind of the subject merges into the object. If you practice in this way, you will then have the experience of the mind merging with the bindu, and it will be very easy to gather the winds. Holding the mind in this way, if it is too tight or too loose, it will give rise to agitation and dullness, so you should abandon these two and hold the mind. That is, for the three letters above the heart, first hold a short-vowel yum (ཡུམ), and mostly hold a short-vowel a (ཨ). If it seems difficult to hold the mind no matter how you visualize a subtle object, then widen it a little. After it is stable on that, then visualize a subtle object and hold the mind. This kind of tummo practice is for the purpose of generating the four joys. To generate that, first, when the bodhicitta that melts from the channels and the two winds gather in the chakra of the crown, joy arises. Then, again, they separate from the channel places, and when they gather in the chakra of the throat, supreme joy arises. Then, again, they separate and gather in the chakra of the heart, and special joy arises. Then, again, they separate and gather in the chakra of the navel, and innate joy must arise. Therefore, by holding the mind on the letters in the center of the dhūti of each of the four chakras, wind and mind are very easy to gather in those four places, and each joy arises in those four places. It is necessary to express it well with experience. If the bodhicitta melts and descends from the upper place, and the duration of stay in those places is not long, then the differences of the joys will not be well recognized, and especially the innate joy will not be well recognized. If you hold the mind for a long time in those four places and find a stable place, then it is very important for the bodhicitta to descend and stay in those places for a long time. Furthermore, if the mind is stable on the haṃ (ཧཾ,haṃ,seed syllable) letter of the crown, because it is the place of the white bindu, the power of increasing the white element is strong. If the mind is stable on the letter of the throat, because it is the place where the roma vein holds the blood, it has the power to lead the heat of tummo that comes from the navel to the place of the bindu, and it will help the virtuous deeds in dreams. If the mind is stable on the hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ,hūṃ,seed syllable) letter of the heart, because it is the supreme place where clear light appears, then waking and sleep

The manifestation of luminosity in both past and future times has great power. If the mind is focused on the short "A" at the navel, because that is the place where semen is emitted and held separately, the white bodhicitta emanating from the navel has the important function of filling the entire body. Moreover, that place is a special place where the fire of tummo resides, therefore, the burning of the fire that melts bodhicitta is highly praised. Therefore, it is very important to understand well the key points of meditating on the chakras and the letters placed on them. Lawapa said that the letters placed on the channels should also be meditated on until the clear appearance arises. Third, the method of meditating on vase breathing is: as mentioned before, first, generally focus the mind on the clear appearance of the channels, and mainly, stabilize the mind on the dhuti where the three channels meet. After that, generally focus on the four letters placed on the channels, and especially, get used to focusing the mind on the short "A" in the dhuti below the navel. If the mind can stably focus on that place, considering that the entry of wind and mind is the same key point, wind and mind will definitely gather in the place held by the mind. Therefore, in the explanatory tantras of Chakrasamvara and Hevajra, such as the Sambhuta, just as the vase breathing is not mentioned when placing the letters and meditating on the four wheels of tummo, it is also taught in many treatises by the great accomplished black practitioner, Lawapa, and Ocean-born. In particular, in the Ear of Whispered Instructions, which fully records the important key points of the completion stage of the tantra, the meditation on vase breathing is not mentioned at that time either. Therefore, if you understand well the method of holding the mind mentioned earlier and meditate, just that will cause the life force to enter the dhuti, and relying on the power of the tummo fire, the four joys will definitely arise. However, Tibetan lamas often combine the meditation on channels and letters with vase breathing for the instructions on tummo, which seems to be done in order to quickly generate the experience of tummo. Just as it is said here, inhaling, filling, pressing, and shooting like an arrow, there are four kinds. Therefore, the previous lamas here believed that it is necessary to have four special vase breaths. This (four special vase breaths) also comes from the instructions of the lamas, and some guidebooks say that it is taught in the four session practice.
