That's the explanation. If there isn't a way to combine the upper and lower winds and hold them inside, one might wonder if Vajra recitation can't get the winds into the central channel, or even if they do get in, they won't dissolve there? If you think like that and do it, it's not right because you haven't fully understood the key points of Vajra recitation. If it's not like that, but you do it with oral instructions, then there's no contradiction. Here, when doing vase breathing, the key point of the object of focus is that it's best to visualize the five points at the heart. The method is that you can first expel one breath, or you don't have to, but you must do both: draw the upper wind downwards and draw the lower wind upwards. This is because both the life force and the downward-clearing wind must be drawn to the heart and gathered into the indestructible. In the Compendium of Origins, it also says: 'The wind that travels above the wheel is nirvana, it travels below. It does not abide in nirvana, it abides in the stamen of the heart lotus. The winds that go above and below should be joined by the mind. By becoming accustomed to that yoga, one obtains the state of stability.' Thus, it is said in the sutra to combine the upper and lower winds and hold them in the heart. The sequence is, first draw the upper wind from the nostrils to the heart, then draw the lower wind from the two lower gates to the heart, causing it to enter the indestructible, and focus the mind there and hold it. It also says, 'Join it with the mind,' so don't do violent physical movements, but focus on the main goal. The extent of holding is to hold until it doesn't cause pain. If it causes pain, don't exhale from the mouth, but slowly exhale from the nose. Then immediately hold it again as before. Before the wind becomes soft, exhale without leaving any residue. When the wind becomes soft, hold it while leaving as much residue as is appropriate. For the vase breathing of death transference, the Compendium of Origins says to fill the entire body with wind up to the soles of the feet. Except for such a special visualization, in this case, focus the mind on a small visualization like the inside of the indestructible in the central channel, and combine and hold the wind there. If you don't do that, but hold with an uncertain visualization or a visualization that fills the entire body, it will be difficult to gather in the center of the desired wheel, and the wind will not stay naturally.

Without starting the (practice of) channels, merely relying on effort to control (the breath) will not stay in that state for long, it will dissipate. If it dissipates for a long time, even if you forcibly control it, it will be difficult to benefit from merging into the dhuti channel, and it will create obstacles instead. Therefore, from the beginning, do not focus on controlling for a long time. If you get used to that, you will not be able to control the breath, and you may even find it impossible to breathe through your nostrils. If it is a scattered state, then as mentioned before, the special tummo fire will not blaze, and special bliss will not arise. If those phenomena appear, it means that the breath has entered the dhuti channel and dissolved. So, if there is such a situation where you cannot control the breath, what should you do? Even if you cannot control the breath, focus on the indestructible point in your heart and keep your mind unwavering. This has the same key point as controlling the breath, so innate wisdom easily arises and lasts for a long time. If you do not do that, but your thoughts are scattered, then it will be easy for karmic winds to rise again, so innate wisdom will last for a short time. Regarding the duration of vase breathing, the Root Tantra of the Compendium says: "First understand vase breathing, then sit in the vajra posture, clap your hands three times, then ring the bell six times. Do vase breathing for as long as thirty-six breaths. To destroy (death) with three times the strength, that is one hundred and eight times." As it is said, the best is one hundred and eight times, the medium is seventy-two times, and the minimum is thirty-six times, as it is said that it can destroy death. Some say that it is very dangerous to practice vase breathing in the heart at the beginning, but if you understand well the gentle method of guiding the breath from above and below, and the practice methods such as the duration of control, it will not create great obstacles. Secondly, because in this case, the emptiness of mind cannot be fully generated by internal methods alone, it is said that external mudras are needed as help to generate it, as it is said in the Five Stages: "Among all illusions, the illusion of women is the most excellent. The distinction of the three wisdoms can be clearly shown from this. Desire itself, non-desire, and the state between them, these three are born from the union of the vajra and lotus when the two senses are combined." So it is said. Here, the emptiness of mind arises from the stages of absorption in the heart, it depends on the mudra, and it is the essence extracted from all wisdom vajras.
