Regarding devotion to the Lama, it is said in the scriptures that the teacher has realized the eight consciousnesses and so on. This is merely a view stated in the Sutra school. Our own system does not accept a basis of all (ālaya-vijñāna) that is different in essence from the six consciousnesses. According to the noble tradition of Guhyasamāja, all the clear light of death is the empty mind, the mind of death; and the mind of near attainment that arises in reverse order from that is the mind of birth. These two cannot be the basis of all. In the Bodhicitta Explanation, only the name "basis of all consciousness" is mentioned, because the mind consciousness is regarded as the basis and root of all pure dharmas. This has been extensively explained in the commentary on the Wisdom Vajra Compendium. If, by means of the pleasure based on the mudrā that is caused by attachment to desirable objects, one meditates on the meaning of suchness, will that exhaust all afflictions or not? If the second is the case, then it is contradictory that the realization of emptiness goes to the ultimate extreme, and yet some afflictions are not exhausted. Because that exhausts all grasping at truth. If the grasping at truth, which is the cause of ignorance, is exhausted, then it is impossible for the result, attachment, etc., not to revert. And if all afflictions are not exhausted, then it is contradictory to attain liberation. If the first is the case, then if attachment is needed as the cause of the path that exhausts attachment, then it would be too much of an extreme for appearance to also be the cause of darkness. Moreover, it is contradictory that that path completely abandons the ignorance of grasping at truth, and that attachment is its cause. Because it is contradictory that the cause that completely exhausts the cause is produced by its result. Moreover, all other afflictions are produced by the ignorance of grasping at truth. This has been explained in detail elsewhere. Furthermore, if it is thought that attachment is used as the path, then if the attachment in that case is merely a name given to attachment to another virtuous dharma, then this contradicts what is said in the Compendium of Trainings: "Whether or not afflictions, when taken as a basis, become the cause of enlightenment, both must be proven with valid cognition." And it is also unreasonable that attachment to another person is said to be the cause of bad migrations. If virtuous dharma is transformed into the cause of enlightenment instead of going to the cause of bad migrations, then what special skillful means is there that is superior to other vehicles? If attachment is actual attachment, then the way in which it is used as the path must be explained.

Therefore, since it is impossible to describe becoming the harmed and the harmer with different modes of apprehension, i.e., "it has become the antidote to such afflictions." Therefore, if it is thought that the skillful means of the unsurpassable vehicle is only for faith, then it should be said: the second view is not desired, while the first view is desired. However, the way to be without the fault of description is: by meditating on the meaning of suchness with the bliss of relying on the mudrā (phyag rgya), afflictions are exhausted, which means that the cause of all other afflictions, ignorance, is exhausted, and when that ceases, all afflictions cease. But this is not abandoning it by cultivating a path that directly contradicts the mode of apprehension of attachment to desirable qualities, so there is no fault. Since grasping at truth does not cease until the attainment of the union of learning, cultivating a path that directly contradicts the mode of apprehension of grasping at truth, and using attachment to desirable qualities as the path, both of these do not contradict each other by entering into one continuum for a while. If one does not separate from attachment to desirable qualities and enjoys special desirable qualities as desired, then although the attachment to desire and the bliss arising from relying on the mudrā (phyag rgya) are cause and effect, since they are temporary cause and effect, if attachment does not precede, then such bliss will disappear, but only the bliss that depends on the mudrā (phyag rgya) will not disappear. For example, the taste of amla soaked in milk is sweet, and it will not arise without milk, but the amla itself will not disappear. In the unsurpassable vehicle, in order to exhaust afflictions, there is also enjoyment of desirable qualities through the union of the two faculties, which has already been proven. In the later text of the Sambhūṭa Tantra, it says: "Attachment must be stopped by cultivating impurity that contradicts itself and the mode of apprehension," and when it is the nature of attachment, it is being separated from attachment. Similarly, it is said: "Lord, son of good family, emaho! The Buddha's attachment is without defilement, and by attachment he conquers separation from attachment, thereby bestowing all happiness." Thus it is said in the sutra. Even for a stream-enterer, enjoying desires is not a natural fault. Just as the excrement of a Ketaka flower eaten by a fragrant elephant becomes bezoar and so on, while an ordinary elephant eats it
