Vigorous protection is also praised for dream yoga. In this, although it is possible that dreams do not arise from sleeplessness for consecutive nights, it is less likely to hinder the virtuous practice combined with dreams. When falling asleep, either because one sleeps too deeply and has no dreams, or because some people are too accustomed to focusing on a single object during the day and do not dream, or even if they do dream, they cannot describe it when they wake up, but this is rare. If it does happen, there are remedies as described in the instructions, and it is easy if you know how to apply the reasoning. Thus, it is neither not falling asleep, nor falling asleep and not having dreams, so when practicing dream yoga, one should think during the day that the current appearances are dreams, and especially, it is important to recognize that it is a dream in the dream, and to leave a strong habit of sending out many aspirations, which is the key to awakening in the dream. For this, even if there are many and long dreams, if they are not clear, then that habit cannot be awakened, so it is important for the dream to be clear. If the dream is clear from the beginning, it is easy to practice, but if it is not clear, then a method to make it clear is needed. This is to focus the mind on the bindu (藏文:ཐིག་ལེ,梵文天城体:बिन्दु,梵文罗马拟音:bindu,汉语字面意思:明点) at the throat, between the eyebrows, etc., before going to sleep. Immediately after dreaming, or waking up not long after dreaming, and hindering the virtuous practice combined with dreams, one needs to know the method to prolong the dream. Although there are many explanations for this, the main one is based on what is said in other tantras: the bindu (藏文:ཐིག་ལེ,梵文天城体:बिन्दु,梵文罗马拟音:bindu,汉语字面意思:明点) located in the heart and jewel (referring to the heart chakra) produces the state of deep sleep, the bindu (藏文:ཐིག་ལེ,梵文天城体:बिन्दु,梵文罗马拟音:bindu,汉语字面意思:明点) at the throat and the secret place below the navel produces dreams, and the bindu (藏文:ཐིག་ལེ,梵文天城体:बिन्दु,梵文罗马拟音:bindu,汉语字面意思:明点) at the forehead and the navel produces the state of wakefulness. Therefore, when falling asleep, because a large amount of air gathers in the heart and jewel, dreamless sleep occurs, and it remains so as long as it stays there. If the air gathered in those two places separates slightly and goes to the throat and the secret place to gather, then dreams arise, and if it stays there for a long time, the dream is long, and if it is short, the dream is short. If the air gathered in those two places separates slightly and goes to the other two places, then one knows that one will wake up. If one knows how to cut off the scattering of wakefulness on this basis, then it is crucial, it is the light of sleep.

Once clarity is achieved, one should also know the method to make it abide for a long time. Among the instructions of the Guru Marpa, the key to grasping the clear light of sleep is in the heart, and the key to grasping dreams is in the throat. These are the two keys for the time of sleep. It is said that when practicing Tummo in the waking state, meditating on the navel is a very important key. These must be understood based on what was said before. The key to grasping dreams being important in the throat refers to grasping dreams that cannot be grasped even with the power of wind, and is said for the sake of grasping dreams that cannot be grasped. During meditative absorption, focusing the mind on the bindu at the crown of the head, these are the two keys for the waking state. By grasping dreams with the power of aspiration, although one cannot ascertain the emptiness of sleep before the dream, if the dream is stable and purified, then in that state of dream, there is also a special instruction in the Marpa tradition for grasping the four emptinesses of sleep. If one can do this, then by stabilizing what one is accustomed to today during sleep, it becomes easier to gather wind during the waking state. It also has a great power to help in drawing in the four emptinesses of the waking state. This should be understood as a special point from what was said before. Thus, it is best to first generate the four emptinesses of sleep through the power of wind, and then arise as the Sambhogakaya in the dream. Or, at the very least, one should generate the emptinesses of sleep through the method just mentioned. If one does not know the instruction of transforming the dream body into the Sambhogakaya and combining it with the dream, then the instructions on dreams do not have a sacred essence. The way the dream body arises as the Sambhogakaya from the state of the Dharmakaya of sleep, and that if this happens, one can undoubtedly combine it with the Bardo, this comes from the five essential instructions of the Marpa tradition, and the key is very important. However, later people only enter roughly, and even if they enter, there are two uncommon ways of arising. In particular, it is very difficult to understand that through the instruction of combining with dreams, there is a way of giving an uncommon certainty of combining with the Bardo. The most supreme of the instructions on combining with dreams is this, while the other special points are transformations of emanation, and viewing pure and impure appearances, etc., which come from the oral instructions.
