Once the mind is focused on the object, the winds gather, and various experiences arise. This is actually a result of previous forces, and not necessarily a direct effect of the subsequent object of focus. Therefore, after becoming proficient in Vajra recitation, if these experiences arise through skillfully holding the previously described objects of focus, one cannot conclude that these instructions are the meaning of those texts. In the Pañcakrama and the Caryāmelāpaka, the different names for the three appearances are described as three letters, the sun and moon, and the vajra, etc. This refers to the fact that the three appearances of the Completion Stage are given these names, and in the Generation Stage, since the wisdom of the three appearances cannot be generated, it means to contemplate them with faith. Therefore, the masters consider it correct that practitioners of the Completion Stage cannot generate those wisdoms by arranging letters on the sun and moon, etc., and meditating on them. Even if we assume that they can be generated, it should be done in the heart, and doing it in the navel is not understanding the key point of this system. The statement that "wisdom and increase arise from the appearances" also indicates that the natures arise from these, and not that wisdoms arise from meditating on letters, etc. Even if, through effort, one meditates on the white, red, and black letters and rays of light, and the external environment appears in the form of these three colors, this is not the way the appearance of colors is described in the scriptures. In the Pañcakramasaṃgraha, although it is said that the collection of three letters is in sequence a symbol of appearance, increase, and attainment, it is not necessary to show that wisdom arises by focusing on the arrangement of these letters. Similarly, it says: "Binding the mind in equality, in the center of the samādhi wheel, if one sees the equality of wisdom, it is the near attainment of great emptiness." This means that by binding the mind focused on the letters arranged on the wheel, thereby restraining the mind from wandering outwards, making the mind be in a state of equality as if it were absorbed into the letters, and through habituating to abide in equality, the mind is absorbed into the indestructible a-thung (藏文:ཨ་ཐུང་,梵文天城体:अथुङ,梵文罗马拟音:athung,汉语字面意思:short A) etc. in the center of the wheel, thereby attaining taste-equality, and from this, great emptiness arises, which is also inconsistent with the above view. Therefore, even when withdrawing the wheel, after obtaining a clear and stable appearance of the letters, first focus on the outer, then withdraw to the middle, and focus on that.

Then, gather inward and focus on that. Then, gather into the indestructible and cultivate focus on that. Also, arrange the letters as before, and if you become accustomed to repeating this process, gathering into the dhu ti will be swift. If you do not gather into the dhu ti but practice externally, the paths of emptiness will not manifest their characteristics, because they arise from gathering into the dhu ti and dissolving. In the five stages of gathering, apart from meditating on the letters and vajra recitation, the holding of wind-energy conjunction is not discussed. The Vajra Garland states: 'The very nature of mantra is accomplished by oneness.' It is said extensively that if one cultivates after fully understanding its essence, accomplishment is possible even without the aid of other wind practices. This means that if one does not fully grasp the essence of vajra recitation and thinks that without holding wind-energy conjunction, vajra recitation cannot cause the winds to dissolve into the dhu ti, then holding the conjunction seems to misunderstand the essence of this instruction, hence it is explained in this way. However, in general, it is not a fault for those who practice vajra recitation to hold wind-energy conjunction. Here, if one holds the conjunction, one must perform the vase-like retention in the heart center, as stated in the Vinaya Source. The statement that the vase-like retention in the heart center is a great obstacle when initially practicing wind-energy is the talk of those who are not skilled in that yoga; if one knows, it is not a great obstacle. Having explained the stages of gathering the winds of those with wheels, one should also understand the stages of gathering of the three without wheels. Regarding the arrangement of letters, although the three wisdoms are not necessarily generated, in the sequence of the descent of bodhicitta from the crown to the jewel, without establishing the arising of emptiness, the arising of emptiness in the sequence of gathering in the heart center comes from the oral instructions of the Mar tradition, which is the essence of the root verse, 'Consciousness-life is the support of gathering; meditate on the wheel of mantra in the heart,' and it also appears as the supreme essence of the father-son instructions. The five elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and consciousness dissolve in the preceding and succeeding order, and the four signs from mirage to burning like a lamp are said to appear in the Lamp Illuminating. Since it has already been explained that appearance arises when the wind dissolves, it is meaningless to say that many signs and so on appear during the three appearances. Five stages of collec
