Pages 401 to 500. Pages 401 to 500. It is called "mind" (yi); all phenomena that possess the nature of being both completely afflicted and completely purified have it as their root. Thus it is said. And in the Vajra Garland (rdo rje 'phreng ba): "Possessing the characteristics of the three appearances, / Wherein the three consciousnesses are obtained, / The nature and root of all sentient beings' realms / Is this." Thus it is said. Since it is said that all three appearances are consciousnesses, it is similar for mind and intellect. Therefore, each of the three appearances can obtain the term for all three of them. Combining those three with the three appearances separately is established upon the three instances of similar types of consciousness of mind arising in sequence. The meaning of the words is as it is said: "Because it accumulates, it is mind; because it becomes a support, it is intellect; because it becomes dependent, it is consciousness." This is complete in each of the three appearances' minds, and there is no difference in size or amount. Therefore, it is not possible to differentiate them through the definition of that term. In the Five Stages, it is said that appearance is other-powered, arising is completely imputed, and near attainment is perfectly established. Explaining it that way, the basis of appearance, where the apprehended and the apprehender appear far apart, is other-powered; relying on that appearance, imputing the apprehended and the apprehender as different substances is completely imputed; in the face of manifesting the unchanging perfectly established, like being separated from both the completely imputed and dualistic appearance, it is the initial basis of emptinesses, and arising occurs relying on that, At the time of near attainment, both of the former two are reversed, and it should be examined whether it is based on the dharma nature of the union of skillful means and wisdom. Appearance is called hatred, arising is called desire, and near attainment is called ignorance. This is because it enters through the gates of small, large, and medium bliss. The state of the path and the four times are as before. The names of the three essences are not the three characteristics that were previously explained. Therefore, one should combine the aspect of emptiness, the aspect of appearance, and the essence of both being equal, and do as before. Since there is no such naming of the three appearances from the vehicle of the perfections, it is a common name to be imputed, but the name that names the three appearances in that way is not common. The second is: appearance, arising of appearance, attainment of appearance, emptiness, and utter emptiness.

, the great emptiness, mind and mental events, ignorance, detachment from desire, and between desire and desire. Thus it is said. A (Tibetan: ཨ, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, literal Chinese meaning: A) refers to the seed that relies on the gate of speech, which is the cause of stability. Because for beings with little faith, the content contemplated and spoken by the Tathagata is difficult to understand, it is visualized as the shape of a moon mandala. Or a lotus, or the image of a woman, or the name of the left, or the name of the night, in gentle things, the conventional image of the mind appears. It is also said that Āḥ (Tibetan: ཨཱཿ, Devanagari: आः, Romanized Sanskrit: āḥ, literal Chinese meaning: A) refers to the seed that relies on the gate of speech, which is the cause of stability. Because for beings with little faith, the content contemplated and spoken by the Tathagata is difficult to understand, it is visualized by relying on the sun mandala. Or a five-pronged vajra, or a jewel, or daytime, or the image of a man, or the right, or the rough form is the conventional image born from the mind. It is also said that the gate relying on the seed of speech is completely accomplished, which is called the attainment of appearance. In the "Changing Chapter," it says: relying on the seed of speech A (Tibetan: ཨ, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, literal Chinese meaning: A). Thus it appears. Among them, the three appearances gradually dissolve into the three emptinesses. It is also unreasonable to regard the three emptinesses as the nature of the three appearances, and not as the three appearances. Because in the "Compendium of Practices," it is said that the three appearances themselves are the three emptinesses. Moreover, this is clearly explained in the "Collected Vajra Essence Tantra." Therefore, the three appearances are: after the wind of all conceptual thoughts dissolves, it is called appearance in the way it appears like moonlight, and this itself is empty because it is empty together with eighty conceptual thoughts. The way it is extremely clear like sunlight is called increasing appearance, Appearance and wind are empty together, so it is called very empty. It appears extremely unclear like the darkness before dawn, and it is close to luminosity, so it is called near attainment of appearance. Increasing and wind are empty together, so it is called the great emptiness of emptiness. Because it is not clear, it is also called ignorance. It is the name of one aspect of near attainment. The gate of speech is the path of the arising of language, and the seed that arises relying on it is the three letters. The cause of stability is the difference between these three.
