should be practiced. Then, having understood the conduct of the Bodhisattvas and generated the desire to learn, if one is able to take on the burden of the conduct of the princes, one should take the Bodhisattva vows and learn their precepts. Then, if one is able to take on the burden of the Vajrayana vows and precepts, one should listen to the "Fifty Verses on the Guru," purify the ways of relying on the guru, and then enter into mantra. Considering doing so, the great Sambhuta, also known as Grahagraha, said: "For this, the order is: On auspicious days and stars, The student, with palms joined respectfully, Should confess all sins, And take the three refuges. Bodhicitta should be well cultivated, As well as the lay vows, And the Bodhisattva vows, And then the Uposatha should also be taken. This order is in accordance with, The Vajra Master, most pure, Relying on this, the scriptures are many, Fearing, therefore, it is not written. Having done so, to the Guru, Plead, 'Grant me empowerment.'" Thus, before the empowerment, having taken the vows of individual liberation and the Bodhisattva's aspiration and vows, then plead to the Guru for the sake of empowerment. The lay vows and their Uposatha observances are for householders, but renunciates entering mantra must completely purify the vows of monks, etc. This is also stated in the Vajrasekhara Sutra: "Killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct, Lying and intoxicants should be abandoned. Abiding in the vows of a householder, Then one should accomplish the king of knowledge. If that one is a renunciate, Then one should abide perfectly in the three vows: Individual liberation and Bodhicitta, The Vidyadhara vows are the most supreme." Thus it is said. If one does not properly train in the stages of the common vehicle path previously explained, one will not be able to cut off attachment to this life, therefore a firm desire to practice Dharma will not arise. Genuine faith will not arise, therefore one will not wholeheartedly take refuge. One will not gain firm conviction in karma and its effects, therefore whatever vows one takes, there will be no meticulous guarding, and one will become a coarse practitioner. Genuine renunciation of samsara will not arise, therefore the pursuit of liberation will be merely verbal. Loving-kindness and

Since the uncultivated root of aspiration Bodhicitta does not arise, one merely goes by the name of Mahayana. Since a strong desire to learn all the practices of Bodhisattvas does not arise, the actual entering vows do not arise. Since a pure understanding of the generalities of Shamatha and Vipassana is not formed, even subtle Samadhi becomes confused. Since certainty in the view of selflessness does not arise, if one wishes not to fall into these errors, one should practice the common path of the two Mahayanas. This is the instruction of the confluence of the three rivers transmitted from the venerable Maitreya to Asanga, and from the venerable Manjushri to Nagarjuna and Shantideva. The great Jowo (Atisha) held that one must enter through the door of either the Vajrayana or the Paramita vehicle. Then, do the Tibetan Lamas of the Guhyasamaja also hold this view? The answer is that the preliminary to both the generation and completion stages is the view of realizing emptiness, and the practice of Bodhicitta with compassion as its root is the meaning of the Sutra of the Compendium of Trainings quoted earlier, as Je Gho also said. In the four-meaning instructions of the five-stage teachings of the Marpa tradition, it is also said that as the basis for practicing the path, taking refuge in the Three Jewels, believing in the ripening of karmic results, becoming accustomed to the ten virtues, taking the Pratimoksha vows after the common refuge, and having the mind of both aspiration and application after the uncommon refuge, must be practiced by a fully empowered yogi. The way of guiding the mind in detail through these paths is named the Stages of the Path. Therefore, it is not that the Tibetan Lamas who study the path of the previous assemblies do not have this tradition. Fully understanding and practicing each complete body of the path means that the foundation for traversing the complete path is fully established, and therefore it is different from others. The way to practice the common path has already been explained in detail elsewhere. The second part has four aspects: making the path of the two stages a suitable vessel, purifying vows and precepts after becoming a suitable vessel, how to meditate on the path after the vows and precepts are purified, and how to attain the result at the end of meditation. The first aspect is: from the Tantras, and the initiation ritual whose meaning is explained by a valid master, by a qualified teacher to a suitable student...

Through the guru's empowerment, the door to the Dharma of mantra is opened, and all the interdependent connections for the arising and accomplishment of fruition in the continuum of the path are arranged without any inversion. Therefore, at the beginning of entering mantra, after one has already become a suitable vessel, through the pure empowerment, one should be established as a second suitable vessel who is empowered to listen to the path of mantra, etc. The method for that has already been explained elsewhere. Secondly, at the time of empowerment, having established the guru, the Buddhas, and the Bodhisattvas as witnesses, one must understand the way to protect the samaya and vows that one has promised to uphold in their presence. It is indispensable to ensure that the protection does not fall into failure before meditating on the path. The method for that has already been explained in detail in the "Fifty Verses on the Guru," "Taking Vows," the "Treatise on Proclamation," the "Root Downfalls," and the "Explanation of the Gross Transgressions." If one is certain that the practices of pure empowerment and samaya are the preliminaries for guiding the two stages, then the guru yoga, the hundred-syllable mantra, and the mandala will arise as preliminaries alongside that. If one is only certain about the latter, then it seems that one will not understand the former either, so one should strive for the former. The third has three parts: ascertaining the order of the two stages, the way to meditate on the two stages with order, and employing the means to enhance the two stages. Firstly, it is not the case that a person who desires the supreme does not meditate on the generation stage, and the order of meditation is also that one first becomes well-versed in the generation stage and then enters the completion stage. As it says in the Five Stages: "Having well-abided in the generation stage, for those who desire the completion stage, this method was taught by the complete Buddha as being like a series of stairs." Thus, the order is determined. In order to explain its meaning in detail, it is also said in the "Collected Meaning of the Five Stages": "Since ordinary beings like us are manifestly attached to various external objects, those who are manifestly attached to conceptual thoughts due to the habitual causes of natures such as existence and non-existence, one and many, two and neither of the two, neither existence nor non-existence, permanence and annihilation, learn the samadhi of the completion stage.
