It is also necessary to explain. That is, it has already been explained that it is done with the sound of the three letters, so it is not that. Then what is it? It is the three, such as the body vajra of the completion stage. That is what is said in the Intent Exposition: "That is the form that has been completely transformed, focusing on it as a deity." This is what is said. In the Compendium of Practices, it is said: "From this explanatory tantra, four things are taught: extracting mantras, the symbols of mantras, the meaning of mantras, and the suchness of mantras." This is because the tantra teaches four things: recitation, focus, symbols, and ultimate truth. Furthermore, in the second chapter of the Root Tantra, "Like body and mind," etc., explains the arising of the illusory body in which the three, body, speech, and mind, are inseparably united. This is the answer to the question about the manner of arising, so these two lines show the arising of the illusory body. Thus, "that is" refers to the non-substantial essence, which is the wind-mind arising from the clear light that is indestructible. From that complete transformation, focusing on the form of a deity means the arising of the body of a Buddha from the wind-mind. That is the illusory body that is inseparable from the three vajras, and there are two illusory bodies here. The fourth is: Unceasing, utterly peaceful, Completely abandoning permanence and annihilation, Not made by the Knower of the Three Times, Discrimination, like space, is of an undifferentiated nature. This alone is the ultimate truth, The nature of individual self-awareness. Thus, the suchness of all dharmas, like space, is not made by the Buddhas, and the two knowledges of discrimination, that is, the mind of clear light bodhicitta that has become one taste and is undifferentiated, is shown as the suchness of mantra or the ultimate truth of mantra. Thus, extracting mantras or reciting mantras, and the symbols of mantras, these two show the way to do vajra recitation. By doing that, generating the bodhicitta of the two truths, that is, the meaning of mantra or the focus of mantra, and the ultimate truth of mantra, what these two show, take this as the meaning of the explanatory tantra. The fifth is, the suchness of mantra in the five stages is taught in the tenth chapter of the Root Tantra, which says that all mantras are contained in three syllables. And, in the second chapter of the Intent Exposition, the recited mantra is taught.

Other treatises also explain this. Those treatises are quoted, and the Compendium of Practices also states that those treatises explain how the three letters generate other letters, and those are quoted. In the quoted treatises, after explaining the combination of mantras with the three letters, it says, "All short vowels become speech, not one, not many, nor non-existent." etc. In this regard, in the Compendium of Practices, other than explaining the meaning of "All short vowels become speech," it is not directly explained in other treatises. The reason for this is that in order to understand the suchness of mantra, it is indispensable to have a good understanding of the difference between the definitive and provisional meanings of the statement that the short A is the root of all speech. If this is understood, it is easy to understand the definitive meaning of other treatises. Therefore, in the Compendium of Practices, in response to the question of how the short A becomes the cause of entering all words, it is said, "Now, those who explain the scriptures here, first take grammar as their basis, and only follow the meaning of sound. Furthermore, in whatever is expressed by letters, they do not know for what reason or how it enters. They do not know the suchness of letters as they are, because it is the realm of the Buddhas. Listen, one should understand it through the order of the teachings!" The meaning of what is said must be well established. In this context, explaining the scriptures refers to all explanations of the meaning of one's own scriptural tradition that do not rely on the explanatory tantras, do not understand the definitive meaning of how the short A becomes the cause of entering all words, and do not understand the suchness of mantra. As it says in the Compendium of Practices, "The so-called suchness of mantra, in the root tantras such as the Compendium of Suchness and the subsequent tantras, only mantras are mentioned, but the combination of mantras is not explained. In the explanatory tantras, the Blessed One has truly spoken of the combination of mantras, the symbols of mantras, the meaning of mantras, and the suchness of mantras." Therefore, those who do not understand the explanatory tantras and are attached to external secret mantras will not understand. Thus it is said. The meaning from grammar to following is: according to the system of grammar, the meaning of language and words is determined by how much the power of sound enters into the explained meaning of the words, and thus the meaning expressed by the sound is understood.
