And there is also no fault of not including the most important paths of practice of the Completion Stage. Secondly, the Five Stages are taught as being like the steps of the Two Stages. It is similar for the five stages of the Completion Stage as well. There, it is said that by abiding in the Vajra recitation, one attains mental focus, that the extreme of the illusory body is purified by the clear light, and that by arising from that, one attains non-dual union. Because of this, it is also possible to understand that by abiding in mental focus, one attains the illusory body. Moreover, this is the order that shows that the later arises in dependence on the former. That the Five Stages are not elaborated, is elaborated in the Condensed Practice: The intention of the Buddha Vehicle, the two bodhicittas, and the coarse deity yoga, the single mindfulness, and the subtle conceptual yoga, from the isolation of the body to union, the order of following by familiarizing oneself with the former and training in the latter, and also the order of reversal from the isolation of the body onwards, that if the former does not exist, the latter does not arise, is also taught. Therefore, it is necessary to desire a definite order. Apart from just explaining it like that, the reasons for such a definite order are not clearly stated in the root explanatory tantras and the treatises of the Five Sons. Kashmirian Laksmikara says: First, the ordinary body must be purified, and this is done by the Generation Stage from the initial union to the isolation of the body of the hundred families. Then, for the purification of speech, there is speech isolation, then for the purification of the ordinary mind, there is mind isolation, then to make the previous aspiration have fruit, to abandon the extreme of annihilation like the teachings of the Great Lord, to accomplish the benefit of beings for eons, and for the sake of abandoning the truth of cessation like the enlightenment of the Hearers, there is the illusory body, and also if there is attachment to that, it will become with an object of focus, for the purpose of purifying that, there is clear light, and for the sake of abandoning the extreme of annihilation of clear light, union is taught, so it is explained. Former Tibetan scholars say: Just as a pleasant sound does not arise until the cavity of a lute is well-tuned, speech isolation does not arise until the body is isolated from the ordinary body by the samadhi of the Vajra Body, and if it is reversed, it will arise. Until the wind, the mount of the mind like a horse, is not brought under control, the mind like a person will not be brought under control, speech

Through controlling the winds, the stillness of mind arises. Within the stillness of mind, if one does not realize that the grossest of all phenomena are merely self-aware mind, or if one does not realize that the subtlest of conventionalities are merely illusory, or if within the stillness of mind there is no samadhi of self-aware bliss, then the illusory body will not arise, for the illusory body is accomplished solely from that. For example, just as one cannot cut off the impermanence of a vase without first cutting off the vase itself, similarly, if the illusory nature of phenomena is not brought to its ultimate conclusion, then the clear light that shatters it through the two meditations will not manifest. Without the prior experience of clear light non-appearance, one will not realize the union of appearance and emptiness inseparable. Just as when mentally severing the appearance and emptiness inseparable of a reflection in a mirror, one must first sever the reflection as lacking the substance of a face. So they say. Some of the Marpa Kagyu say that the first two (mind isolation and illusion) are similar to hand mudras, and that mind isolation is taught to show that body and speech are integrated into mind; illusion is taught to abandon the clinging to truth; clear light is taught to abandon the clinging to illusion; and union is taught to abandon nihilism. The first system is that the three isolations purify the defilements of the three doors, and that they must be abandoned from the grossest to the subtlest, so the order of the three is considered definite. Because there is nihilism in mind isolation, the illusory body is practiced to abandon it; clear light is to purify the object of clinging to permanence; and union is taught to abandon the nihilism that is also in it. It seems that this is what is being said. It is not necessary to show the uncommon way in which the earlier of the three isolations leads to the later, and the path taught to abandon nihilism gives rise to eternalism, and if the path to abandon it gives rise to nihilism, it is like an elephant's bath, so it cannot be a correct path. Moreover, the Compendium of Trainings says: Because of being separated from conventional truth, the ultimate truth cannot be directly realized. Therefore, in order to directly realize clear light, it is taught that one must first realize the illusory body, that is, one must obtain it. Therefore, when directly realizing clear light, one must explain the reason from the perspective that the illusory body must arise first, rather than saying that in order to abandon clinging to illusion, one must enter clear light. What is the point of explaining the reason in this way?
