When coarse non-conceptualizations cease, and the mind naturally abides in immovability, merely meditating on non-conceptual bliss that does not stray to any object is the meaning of meditating on emptiness. If one only meditates on bliss, it is unreasonable to say that one will not be liberated from samsara. Therefore, one must cultivate conviction that thoroughly establishes the meaning of selflessness. Secondly, if cultivating conviction by ascertaining the meaning of selflessness through innate bliss is meditating on emptiness, then, in the Samputa it says: One should not meditate on emptiness, nor should one meditate on non-emptiness. A yogi should not abandon emptiness, nor should one completely abandon non-emptiness. From grasping emptiness and non-emptiness, many conceptualizations will arise. If one completely abandons them, all conceptualizations will arise. Therefore, one should completely abandon these two. Like this, it is not allowed to meditate by grasping either emptiness or non-emptiness, which contradicts the above statement. Regarding this, the meaning of that scripture is explained in the Manang Nyema (མན་ངག་སྙེ་མ་, Ear of Instructions) as follows: Since forms and so on exist in the ultimate sense, emptiness eliminates the extreme of permanence; since they exist in the conventional sense, non-emptiness eliminates the extreme of annihilation. Therefore, it is forbidden to meditate by grasping that existence in the conventional sense is emptiness, and existence in the ultimate sense is non-emptiness. Since the absence of inherent existence of forms and so on in the ultimate sense is itself the nature of forms and so on in the conventional sense, it is said that one should not abandon the nature of emptiness in the ultimate sense and non-emptiness in the conventional sense. Therefore, from grasping non-emptiness in the ultimate sense and grasping emptiness that does not exist in name, all conceptualizations of clinging to extremes arise. If one abandons emptiness in the ultimate sense, one will fall into the conceptualization of the extreme of permanence; if one abandons non-emptiness in name, one will generate the conceptualization of clinging to the annihilation of cause and effect, which is the meaning of the scripture, and not as you explain it. Because in the same scripture before that, it also says: The Dharmadhatu is extremely equal, one should grasp it like water and a tree. It means that one should grasp it as without essence. Moreover, the same scripture also says: Desiring to exhaust all suffering, desiring to attain the supreme bliss of perfect enlightenment, one should steady the mind, diligently examine, and make its nature without things. It means that diligently examining and ascertaining its absence of inherent existence is said to be the cause of exhausting all suffering and attaining supreme bliss.
