Before the Venerable One, it was said: If all of this is emptiness, and is of unborn nature, then how do happiness and suffering, etc., enter here, and how does one transmigrate in samsara due to karma? As soon as one clings to a self, due to the defilements such as desire, being controlled by conceptual thoughts, therefore all of these are only mind, arising truly like an illusion. Thereafter, virtuous and non-virtuous actions, from these one is born in happy and unhappy realms. It is taught in the scriptures. The disciple of the Lord of Great Bliss, Anangavajra, also said: From these arise birth and death, etc., greatly increasing, possessing a mind attached to the untrue, one wanders in a cycle of extreme suffering. Those of little wisdom, as long as there is great clinging to reality, will remain in the prison of existence. This explains that due to the power of clinging to reality, which clings to the untrue as true, one wanders in samsara, and as long as there is clinging to reality, one will not be liberated from samsara. This is like what is said in the Ratnavali: As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there will be clinging to self. If there is clinging to self, there will be karma, and from that karma there will be birth. This is similar to the statement that if one does not prevent clinging to the aggregates as real, one cannot avoid birth due to the power of karma and afflictions. Secondly, therefore, in order to completely exhaust the habit of clinging to reality, which is the root of samsara, not only is it necessary to realize emptiness by understanding that the aggregates are without inherent existence, but also in order to cut the bonds of samsara by the power of karma and afflictions, the wisdom of realizing the absence of inherent existence is indispensable. Therefore, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who have cut the bonds of samsara have also meditated on that meaning beforehand. These have already been explained in detail elsewhere. Therefore, it is said in the Commentary on the Mind of Enlightenment: Those who do not understand emptiness are not a basis for liberation. Those who are ignorant will wander in the prison of the six realms of existence. And, Anangavajra also said: Therefore, in order to make the three realms of beings happy, in order to eliminate one's own confusion, those who have a spiritual friend should abandon clinging to reality. As it is said, not only those who enter the Characteristic Vehicle, but even those who enter the Vajra Vehicle, in order to abandon clinging to reality, which is the root of samsara, need to realize the view of emptiness of self.

One should seek the understanding of selflessness and meditate on its meaning. As it is said in the Vajra Heart Ornament Tantra: Having understood one yoga after another, going to a secluded place and striving diligently, sins are purified, and enlightenment is attained in this life. By meditating on the absence of self in phenomena, one comprehends omniscience. Therefore, if one understands one yoga and meditates in a secluded place, the yoga of attaining enlightenment in this life refers to meditating on the absence of self in phenomena. There are many such examples. Therefore, in abandoning the clinging to reality and realizing selflessness, one must also refute the object grasped by self-grasping and realize its non-existence. It is not enough to merely restrain the mind from wandering towards the object of clinging to reality. As the Lord of Reasoning said: If the object is not refuted and its non-existence is not realized, it is not possible to abandon it. Arya Deva also said: When selflessness is seen in objects, the seeds of existence will be destroyed. As it is also said in the Introduction to the Middle Way: All afflictions and faults arise from the view of the aggregates, having seen with the wisdom arising from the (view of the aggregates) that the self is its object, the yogi will eliminate the self. Therefore, the method of initially generating a decisive understanding of the view of selflessness is no different from what is explained in the tantric and Madhyamaka treatises. As it is said in the Commentary on the Awakening Mind: Bodhisattvas, through the practices of the secret mantra path, thus generate the conventional aspect of the awakening mind, which is the nature of aspiration, and then generate it through the power of meditating on the ultimate awakening mind. Therefore, its nature should be explained. After saying this, it then refutes the self of the person as asserted by other schools, as well as the tenet of the Hearer school of our own tradition, which holds the grasping and the grasped as different entities and as real, and the Dharma self, which the Mind-Only school asserts as the mind that is empty of the grasping and the grasped as different substances and as real, thereby establishing selflessness. Therefore, the method of seeking the view of selflessness prior to the generation (of the ultimate awakening mind) by the secret mantra practitioner through the power of meditating on the ultimate awakening mind is explained in the same way as it appears in the Madhyamaka treatises. The Sarvastivada and Sautrantika schools of the Hearers assert that the grasping and the grasped are real, but all Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Noble Ones do not accept this, and they have entered their path.
