Without meticulous guarding of vows, one becomes a coarse practitioner. Because genuine renunciation of samsara does not arise, the pursuit of liberation is limited to mere understanding. Because the unfabricated aspiration for enlightenment, rooted in love and compassion, does not arise, one is merely a Mahayanist in name. Because a strong desire to study the entirety of the bodhisattva's conduct does not arise, genuine entering vows do not arise. Because a pure understanding of the general principles of shamatha and vipashyana is not established, one is confused even by subtle samadhi. Because certainty in the view of selflessness does not arise, if one wishes not to fall into these faults, one should train in the common path of the two vehicles of the Mahayana. This is the instruction of the confluence of three rivers, transmitted from Lord Maitreya to Asanga, and from Lord Manjushri to Nagarjuna and Shantideva. Jowo Rinpoche (Atisha) considered it necessary to enter through the gate of either the Vajrayana or the Paramitayana. Now, one might wonder if the Tibetan lamas of Guhyasamaja also hold this view. As a preliminary to both generation and completion stages, the view of realizing emptiness and cultivating the mind of enlightenment rooted in compassion, as stated in the previously cited quote from the Compendium of Trainings, are also taught by Je Gowo. In the Marpa tradition's five-stage teachings, the "Four Meanings," it is also said that as a basis for practicing the path, one must take refuge in the Three Jewels, have faith in the ripening of karmic results, be accustomed to the ten virtues, and after the common refuge, take the vows of individual liberation. After the uncommon refuge, one must possess the mind of aspiration and engagement, and it must be practiced by a fully empowered yogi. The detailed demonstration of how to guide the mind through these means is what is called the "Stages of the Path." Therefore, this tradition is not absent among the Tibetan lamas who study the path of the previous assemblies. Fully understanding and practicing each complete aspect of the path means that the foundation for traversing the complete path is fully established, and thus it is unique. The method of training in the common path has already been explained in detail elsewhere. The second part has four aspects: making the path of the two stages a suitable vessel, after becoming a vessel, purifying the vows and precepts, after the vows and precepts are purified, how to practice the path, and finally, how to attain the fruit of practice.

The rules! First, according to what is said in the tantras, the qualified master bestows empowerment on the worthy disciple through the ritual of empowerment, opening the door to the Dharma of mantra, and arranging all the interdependent connections for the arising of the path and the accomplishment of the fruit without reversing them. Therefore, after becoming a suitable vessel at the beginning of entering mantra, through the pure empowerment, one should be made into a second suitable vessel capable of hearing the path of mantra and so on. And the rules for that have already been explained elsewhere. Second, at the time of empowerment, having established all the gurus, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas as witnesses, one must know the way to keep the vows and precepts that one has promised to protect before them. Before practicing the path, it is indispensable to protect the vows from falling into decay. And the rules for that are also explained in detail in the "Fifty Verses on the Guru," "Taking Vows," "Treatise on Proclamation," and "Separate Explanations of Root and Gross Downfalls," from which one should understand. If one is certain that the practice of pure empowerment and vows is the preliminary practice for guiding into the two stages, then guru yoga, the hundred-syllable mantra, and mandala, etc., will follow as preliminaries. If one is only certain of the latter, then it seems that one will not understand the former, so one should strive for the former. Third, there are three points: determining the order of the two stages, the method of practicing the two stages in order, and using the means to enhance the two stages. First, a person who desires the supreme fruit does not not practice the generation stage, and the order of practice is also to first practice the generation stage well, and then enter the completion stage. As it is said in the "Five Stages": "Having well established the generation stage, for those who desire the completion stage, this method is said by the complete Buddha to be like a ladder of stages." Thus, the order is determined. In order to explain its meaning in detail, it is also said in the "Condensed Commentary on the Meaning of the Five Stages": "Like us ordinary people, we are very attached to the various external objects, and regarding existence and non-existence, one and many, two and non-two, neither existent nor non-existent, permanence and annihilation, etc.
