Therefore, when it is said that "[He] realized the selflessness of phenomena," if it is said that the realization of the selflessness of phenomena is also present in the Lesser Vehicle, wouldn't that become contradictory? If asked in this way, since there are two types of Hearers, those who realize Suchness and those who do not, it is specifically stated as "Hearers who cling to objects of focus." The Noble One said, "If you do not realize the absence of characteristics, you say there is no liberation. Therefore, it is in the Great Vehicle that you fully explain it." As explained by quoting this in the commentary on the *Entering the Middle Way*, although the selflessness of phenomena is taught in both collections of scriptures, it is with the intention that it is extensively taught in the Great Vehicle that it is said that the realization of the selflessness of phenomena is taught in the Great Vehicle. Similarly, in the *Commentary on the Awakening Mind*, it is said, "For the benefit of those who wish to help, the aggregates of form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are taught to the Hearers. The Supreme Two-Legged One (Buddha) always said that form is like a mass of foam, feeling is like a bubble on water, perception is like a mirage, formation is like a plantain tree, and consciousness is like an illusion. Such a teaching of the aggregates is taught to the Bodhisattvas." Just as with these examples, the teaching of the aggregates as being without inherent existence is more extensive for Bodhisattvas. It is with the intention that it is not repeatedly taught in the scriptures of the Lesser Vehicle, but it is not that it is not taught at all in the Lesser Vehicle like these five examples, because in the commentary on the *Entering the Middle Way*, a sutra taught to the Hearers is quoted, in which it is said that the five aggregates are like these five examples. If it is the case that the Lesser Vehicle does not realize emptiness, which is the absence of inherent existence, then it would be unreasonable to say in that very text, "Those who do not understand emptiness will not attain liberation. Those ignorant ones will wander in the prison of existence in the six realms," because the Lesser Vehicle has liberation from the prison of existence. Similarly, in the *Compendium of Trainings*, it is said that the Teacher caused those who have faith in the vast to realize the eight collections of consciousness, etc., but this is merely stating that it is taught in the Sutra Pitaka. In their own system, they do not accept a basis of all (ālaya) that is different in essence from the six consciousnesses. According to the system of the Noble Ones in the *Guhyasamāja Tantra*, the clear light of death is the mind of death, which is completely empty, and the mind of near attainment that arises in reverse order from that is the mind of birth.

Those two are not suitable for the ālaya, and in the Bodhicitta Commentary, it is said that the name "ālaya-vijñāna" is only mentioned to explain that the mind's consciousness is the basis and root of all pure dharmas. This has already been explained in detail in the commentary on the Compendium of Wisdom Vajra (Jñāna Vajra). If the happiness that relies on the mudrā, which is caused by attachment to desirable qualities, is used to meditate on the meaning of suchness, will it exhaust all afflictions or not? If it is like the second case, it is contradictory that the realization of emptiness goes to the ultimate extreme, and that some afflictions are not exhausted. Because it exhausts all clinging to truth. If the ignorance of clinging to truth as the cause is exhausted, then it is unreasonable that the result, such as attachment, will not be reversed. And if all afflictions are not exhausted, then it is contradictory to attain liberation. If it is like the first case, if attachment is needed as the cause of the path that exhausts attachment, then appearance would also be too much of a cause of darkness. Moreover, it is also contradictory that that path completely abandons the ignorance of clinging to truth, and that its cause is attachment. Because it is contradictory that the cause that exhausts the cause from the root is caused by its result. And all other afflictions are caused by the ignorance of clinging to truth. These have been explained in detail elsewhere. Furthermore, if it is thought that attachment is used as the path, then in this case, if attachment is merely a name given to attachment to other virtuous dharmas, then it contradicts the two cases in the Compendium of Practice (Śikṣāsamuccaya) regarding whether or not afflictions are the basis for becoming the cause of bodhi, which are proven with reasoning. And it is also unreasonable that attachment to other people is said to be the cause of bad migrations. What special skillful means is there compared to other vehicles in transforming virtuous dharmas into the cause of bodhi instead of the cause of bad migrations? If attachment is real, then it must be explained how it is used as the path. It must be explained how it has become the object to be harmed and the agent of harm through different ways of clinging, because it is impossible to explain that it has acted as an antidote to a certain affliction. Therefore, if it is thought that the skillful means of the unsurpassed vehicle is only something to be believed, then it should be said. The second view is not desired, but the first view is desired. However, the way to be without the fault of speaking is,
