“Wang” refers to clinging to the grasper and the grasped, thus wandering in samsara. This is due to the fault of not realizing the emptiness of mind. If one recognizes that the mind is free from the grasper and the grasped, one can generate the precious wisdom of the Buddha. Therefore, the term “precious” indicates being separate from the ordinary. What is refuted is the statement that the grasper is the grasped. Thus, when the vajra and lotus enter equally, the three appearances arising from the bodhicitta reaching the root, waist, and tip of the vajra indicate the emptiness of mind that is separate from the yogi, which is not seen in meaning. The vajra of cessation is luminosity, and the mind becoming that is reaching there. When entering there, clinging to the signs such as mirages, that is, the appearance of signs arises, which is to say, it arises. The appearance of signs is said to be fivefold. The three appearances from mirages to the appearance like space arise from the prior elements of earth, water, fire, and wind dissolving into the subsequent ones. The appearance of space is like the image of a "spark" as translated by Pa Tsab, and it is unreasonable to think of seeing a small sky. From the subtle realms becoming the three universally appearing ones, an appearance like a lamp arises from there. In the "Lamp Illuminating," it is said that the subtle realm is the wind of self-nature's conceptualization shaking violently, and when it dissolves, an appearance like a lamp not moved by the wind arises. The "Compendium of Conduct" says: The aggregates and so forth enter the subtle realms, and the subtle realms enter the mind. The first one mentioned here is the prior elements from earth to wind dissolving into the subsequent ones. The latter states that the subtle realms enter the mind, and the "Lamp Illuminating" states that the subtle realms enter the three appearances. These two are not contradictory, because the former is coarse and the latter is a detailed distinction. For example, the three consciousnesses enter luminosity without being separated, as stated in the "Discrimination of the End of Actions" and the "Vajra Garland," and as stated in the "Compendium of Conduct," they are separated and then collected into the near-attainment luminosity. Most old translations say that after the self-nature universally appearing dissolves, it becomes like a cloudless sky, and the constantly appearing luminosity is the fifth. Some versions and some translations say that it dissolves into the universally appearing. But the former is correct, because when luminosity appears, the

This is because all three "vas" must be dissolved. What is said in the Lamp Illuminating is a condensed statement. If expanded, as stated in the Compendium of Conduct, it must be explained that mind dissolves into mental factors, mental factors dissolve into near-attainment mind, and near-attainment mind dissolves into clear light. Regarding the manner of appearance during the three appearances, it is also stated in the Compendium of Conduct: "The second is appearance, like the rays of the moon." Etc., do as previously quoted. In the Compendium of Conduct, it says, "First, like a mirage, one sees a collection of five rays of light." It is said that the three, such as smoke, are not mentioned, which is a condensed statement. In detail, as stated in the Later Tantra and the Lamp Illuminating, all four signs are necessary. Through these five signs, one will attain the clear light of meaning, which is beyond suffering. As a means of knowing that earth dissolves into water, etc., in the Lamp Illuminating, from the Differentiation of the End of Actions is quoted: "Just as it came before, in this order it will dissolve. First, earth enters water, water dissolves into fire, fire dissolves into wind, wind enters consciousness, consciousness departs into grasping, and then enters clear light. From that, having become a scent-eater, it is driven by karma and arises. Thus, in all the thousands of births, having been born and born again and again, nature revolves and is confused everywhere. Not the realm of speculation, but completely knowing appearance, until beings have not found it." What is quoted here is the treatise of Nagarjuna, not the sutra of Kaladana's explanation of the Differentiation of the End of Actions. Consciousness entering clear light is the universal appearance dissolving into clear light, not the dissolution of nature. Although this shows the order of death at the base, it and the two, entering the clear light of the path, are similar in that they appear like mirages, etc. Therefore, when one attains enlightenment in the bardo, the appearance of mirages, etc., will appear. And in the process of entering clear light in this life, the measure of whether the consciousness with signs is stable or unstable is similar to the five, such as mirages, which is the difference. And the measure of stability and instability stated in the Compendium of Conduct, and the difference stated in the Lamp Illuminating that it appears in the form of mirages, etc., is what is desired. In the commentary on the Oral Transmission, the four signs
