The self is the precious one. By obtaining it, one becomes famous in the three realms. Having crossed to the other shore of the ocean of gathering, may Chandrakirti, the illuminator, be victorious! It is said that the scholar Lakshakara's disciple, the Pandit Kumara, also stated that these clearly show that he was a disciple who had seen Nagarjuna's face and possessed the oral instructions. Thus, Naropa, Abhyakara, Thukje Palshe, Kashmir Laksmī, Thupa Palsangpo, Kalden Drakpa, Kumara, Kuladhara, Tathāgataraksita, Lilavajra, and all those who followed the noble father and sons and explained the Guhyasamaja, regarded Chandra's feet as being like those of the noble ones and as a place of trust. The third is that among the Guhyasamaja cycles that follow the noble father and sons and were composed by other Indians, the commentary on the Uttaratantra called "The Secret Lamp" is said in some texts to have been composed by Je Naropa, while in others it is said to have been composed by Kirti Bhadra. At the end of it, it says that Samantabhadra, Akashagarbha, Kirti Bhadra, Naropa, Yeshe Dngosgrub, and the root explanation are all different names, and that it was translated by Smriti. Smriti was a disciple of both Naropa and Yeshe Snyingpo. There is one large text called "The Five Stages of Guhyasamaja Instructions," and a smaller one called "The Condensed Five Stages Clarified," which is said to have been composed by Naropa and translated by Marpa. The first of these is said to lead gradually like a staircase, which is the path for those of middling and dull faculties, and it also considers the path for those of sharp faculties to be sudden, etc. It speaks of many gross errors that contradict the five stages and the Abhisamayalamkara, so it seems that some Tibetans have falsely attributed it to Naropa. This "Condensed Five Stages Clarified" is the Guhyasamaja instruction of the Marpa tradition, and both of the lineages that have been transmitted from Tsur (near present-day Tsurphu Monastery) rely on it as their source. Most of the instructions of the lama Marpa have a small Indian text, but there does not seem to be a separate small text for the instructions on the five stages, and it seems that this is used as the text. It also seems that the meanings of the large texts of the noble cycle are consistent, so it should be regarded as the root text of the Marpa tradition's instructions on the five stages. At the end of this, glorious.
