If not, rely on the skillful in cultivating mindfulness from other occasions to eliminate it. If dullness and agitation are very strong and occur repeatedly, like this, if dullness and darkness occur repeatedly, then hold the mind by mixing the mind of a goose and the empty clarity of the sky without distinction, and the two, the mind being clear and pure, and abiding on the object of focus as desired, will come about. Agitation is done by doing wind practice, holding it inside, the mind also abides, and wisdom will distinguish between pure and impure. This is the oral instruction for forcibly cutting off dullness and agitation. One must know the object of focus on which to place it, and the way to place it, and the way experience arises from meditating on the object of focus, and the distinction between subtle and coarse dullness and agitation, and all the characteristics. Second, regarding the four key points of higher seeing and how to cultivate the four perfections, first is how to determine the measure of what is to be refuted. First, observe how the "I" arises in the innate mind. Then observe how the thought "I am Bao" appears in the mind. After determining the way it appears, one must also rely on antidotes to separately counteract the way the appearance grows and the way the clinging arises, in order. The way of looking should also be done without losing the thought "I am," but by holding onto another mind. When looking in this way, first there will be the two, the appearance and non-appearance of the aggregates. When it appears, there will also be the appearance of the "I" abiding in the middle of the aggregates, and the appearance of the "I" being other than the aggregates. When it does not appear, there will also be the appearance of something like an empty void, and the appearance of something like the form of color and shape, which are not correct ways of appearing. Therefore, for this innate mind, the "I" appears as if it does not depend on any object, but is clearly apparent from its own side. That itself will bring about a feeling of words being loud, popping, power being clear, bright, and seeming to waver no matter what it is combined with. That appearance is also short-lived, so it will not fully appear. That will also appear like a memory that has grown and gradually formed together with that mind. For that way of appearing, there will also be the ways of appearing of both the aggregates being one and different. Like "I am" and "in my hand." The clinging to "I" like "distinguishing without abandoning the innate appearance" is self-grasping.

Oh! The thought of "I am" is like "I go, I stay," and so on. Having ascertained the way it appears, if it is established as such, then it becomes a state that cannot go beyond being one with or different from the skandhas (Sanskrit: skandha, Devanagari: स्कन्ध, Roman transliteration: skandha, literal Chinese meaning: aggregates), and contemplating the way that being one or different causes harm to sleep. Therefore, if it is clearly determined that the appearance of "I" is not established in that way, then continuously training in clear ascertainment is the key to the method of training. At that time, it is not about newly creating an object of negation and then thinking that it does not exist in that way, but rather, first clarifying the object of negation, and then focusing single-pointedly on the non-affirming negation that clearly arises from the certainty that "it does not exist in that way." For this, there are four key points: first, determining the object of negation; second, determining the pervasion; third, determining the property; and fourth, determining the object to be established. If divided into four valid cognitions, they are: the valid cognition that determines the way the object of negation appears; the valid cognition that determines either oneness or otherness; the valid cognition that determines non-establishment as one; and the valid cognition that determines non-establishment as other. To distinguish this, one needs to be skilled in the two ways of moving in equipoise and subsequent attainment. For dispelling obstacles, if the valid cognition of the first key point is determined, it will not occur, but the fear of falling into the dangers of eternalism or nihilism can be dispelled by the flawless appearance of subsequent attainment. If emptiness is meditated upon as utter nothingness, it will become meditating on the view of permanence based on true existence, so it should be combined with wisdom and meditated upon inseparably. The way the appearance of "I am" is: if one thinks, "I am," the way this general thought appears is, "I am," then simultaneously with that thought, something like a hail of appearances will appear. If that appearance is established as it appears, then it is certain that it is established as either one with or different from the eye, ear, etc. If it is established as one, then otherness will completely disappear, so the eye will also become the one that hears sounds, and the ear will also become the one that sees forms, etc. If it is established as other, then the very thought of "I am" will enjoy the object, and the happiness of "I am" will not become what is to be accomplished, so one should draw out such certainty and practice the method of cultivation as before. Then, looking at the way consciousness appears, it will appear to be firm, as if independently enjoying the object. The way to draw out that certainty, and all the methods of cultivating shamatha and vipashyana, etc., are the same as before. Then, establish it on the skandhas gathered by one's own continuum and meditate on it.
