Therefore, there is no contradiction. Even so, the reason for making the two divisions of explanation separately is that the five explanations such as literal meaning mostly show the generation stage, and the other five explanations mostly show the completion stage. As it is said in the Lamp Illuminating [Tattvasiddhi], "The Tathagatas, for the sake of those to be tamed, rely on the two stages, and thus speak of the divisions of teachings." Therefore, for the four such as sandalwood, it is easy to generate the first stage in this life, and difficult to generate the second stage. It may be possible to generate the first stage completely, but it is not possible to generate the second stage completely. For jewels and the like, it is easy to generate even the completion stage, let alone the first stage. If the second stage can be generated completely, what need is there to mention the first stage? Therefore, the explanation of the five such as literal meaning is said to be the explanation for sandalwood and the like. The explanation of the remaining five is said to be for the disciples. But these two parts do not mean that if one is explained, the other is not explained. Then, since all five people are disciples, why are only jewels and the like called disciples, and the other five are not called disciples, and the other four are called assemblies, but jewels and the like are not called that? If you think so, calling jewels and the like disciples is because they are the main part of the disciples. For example, when a king goes with his retinue, it is said that the king goes, which is said from the main aspect. The meaning of retinue is common

Merely by misunderstanding what is said in the stages of the path, one might think that it is not necessary to diligently generate the two bodhicittas in the mindstream, and by misunderstanding that the generation stage is said to be a means of accomplishing common siddhis, one might think that it is not necessary to properly generate the experience of the generation stage in order to accomplish supreme siddhis. These wrong discriminations will be eliminated. Sixth, the previously mentioned examination of disciples of five types of people is like the five, such as jewels. Among them, a person like a jewel is like a jewel because it is difficult to obtain and can produce the desired fruit. That is, he has completely pure vows that he has taken, is proficient in all that he has heard, is skilled and eager to do good, has the wisdom to understand through the beginning, has a definitive lineage in the unsurpassed vehicle and is awakened, is the same continuum, does not change, and after hearing his own Dharma, is able to truly proclaim the meaning of what he has heard to others. As it is said in the Lamp Illuminating: "One who is pure in discipline and skilled, who has wisdom and is of one continuum, who after hearing is able to proclaim well, is called a jewel." It is also said that a person like a jewel is one whose roots of virtue are completely mature, who is proficient in all that he has heard, who desires to manifest Buddhahood and has a definitive lineage. A person like sandalwood is one who hears little, and when urged to hear, is arrogant and says, "I know." He has not well ascertained the meaning of the scriptures, so he has no foundation, and when arguing, he speaks much. It is difficult to remove these faults and embrace him with virtues. Just as sandalwood has no fruit, little scent, many thorns, and is entwined with poisonous snakes, so it cannot be approached. One who hears little and is arrogant, who speaks much without foundation, who cannot be embraced, is called a sandalwood person. A person like a lotus has the root of white Dharma—faith, has great compassion, has wisdom, and after hearing the Dharma, opens the door of wisdom, that is, wisdom increases. Just as pouring water from one side of a seamless leather bag, the meaning of what is heard cannot be retained for long. That is, like a lotus that has fragrance, a lotus that has the virtue of generating joy opens, the heart of the lotus
