The explanation of that is to immerse the body in clear light and hold it. For each of the two, the round holding and the subsequent destruction, through the stages of meditating on the three vajras of body, speech, and mind, repeatedly immersing in clear light, and becoming accustomed through relying on practice, the illusory body is purified into clear light. Thus, the wisdom that directly realizes the very nature of the meaning of clear light will arise. The wisdom that is its object is also the great bliss of coemergence that arises from the three stages of entering, abiding, and dissolving the life force into the dhūtī, so it is very different from directly realizing it through the paths of other vehicles and lower tantras. The details should be learned from the Explanation of the Five Stages. When entering the meaning of clear light of the fourth stage, the previous illusory body is also purified and disappears. So, how does it arise again as the union body? From the Five Stages: "That clear light with its own nature, for those endowed with consciousness and wind, through the order of self-blessing, also changes several times for the sake of sentient beings. Just as from a clear river, fish quickly rise, likewise, it is said that a network of illusion arises from the emptiness and clarity of all things." Therefore, this body also arises only from wind and mind, through the order of self-blessing, and from the clear light that is like a clear river, a pure illusory body arises like a fish suddenly jumping up. The meaning of the example that is said is that the union body arises from clear light without any other interruption. In the Compendium of Conduct it is said: "The example of quickly awakening from sleep." Sleep is an example of clear light, and awakening is an example of the union enjoyment body arising from it, and there is no interruption between them, which is appropriate. In the stages of what is to be trained, the immediate attainment of the close attainment body after the clear light of death, and the simultaneous accomplishment of the intermediate state, are very consistent. Therefore, although the union body is immediately accomplished from the meaning of clear light of the fourth stage, it is not contradictory that the close attainment body arises from clear light, and the subsequent attainment body arises from that, and appearances gradually arise from that. Although it is said that three emptinesses arise in reverse order at the time of accomplishing union, that is not said for the purpose of accomplishing that body. If union is...

Isn't it the case that the mind of clear light of the essence and the pure illusory body gather together at the same time? Even if one can accomplish the pure illusory body immediately upon arising from the fourth level of clear light, how can it be established as union since there is no actual wisdom of clear light at that time? Regarding this, among the twenty-one unions explained in the five stages, the main point of union is: In the Chakgyur, it says, "Knowing that nature in sequence, Self-blessing and clear light know, Whichever of those alone gathers, This is the sequence of union." Here, self-blessing and clear light are said to be a pair, and the gathering of the two is said to be union. And, "The conventional and the ultimate, Knowing the distinctions separately, In whatever place they truly merge, That is said to be union." Here, the conventional and the ultimate are said to be a pair, and the merging of the two is said to be union. That is it. Before obtaining the clear light of meaning, when the illusory body accomplished from the five winds of clear light exists, there is no clear light in which the mind has become one with ultimate truth. Before obtaining union, when there is clear light in which the mind of bliss has become one with the ultimate, the conventional, in which the body has become an illusory body, does not exist, and because it is alternating, there is no union. When the body is called self-blessing, which means the ultimate of the conventional illusory body is reached, and the mind is called clear light, which means the ultimate of ultimate truth is reached, when the two gather at the same time in one continuum, there is no alternating but gathering simultaneously, therefore union is obtained. Like that, the main point of union, when first obtained, requires the two to gather at the same time, but because there are other ways of establishing it as union, it is not necessary to establish as union with that way of establishing for anyone who has obtained union. The Sanskrit word for union is Yuganaddha, Yuga is pair, and Naddha is non-dual, that is, the two parts gather simultaneously in a way that is alternating rather than being two, that is the union previously explained. This is obtained when one arises from the last appearance of the reverse order and then enters clear light again. For the two dharmas such as samsara and nirvana, abandoning the conceptual thought of grasping the two as true, the union of great bliss wisdom that is inseparable from that conceptual thought increases in the five stages.
