It is said that there were thousands of Guhyasamaja Tantras in the past, which refers to the rough number of condensed tantras. Here, one might wonder, what is the meaning of what is known as the root tantra, the subsequent tantra, and the explanatory tantra? The classification of the root tantra is twofold: the extensive tantra and the concise tantra or the condensed tantra. Firstly, the very extensive tantra that was spoken of initially, in relation to the later disciples, was condensed and taught from the former because they had inferior lifespans and wisdom, and could not easily comprehend it. These two are merely distinctions of the extensive and concise words of the tantra, but other than that, both are root tantras, so they are not the root tantras of the former and the latter. The fundamental meaning of the root tantra is one that is established in relation to the branches, just as the trunk of a tree is called the root in relation to the branches; one that is made under the influence of time, just as the first owner is called the root owner; one that is established in relation to the subsequent tantra; and one that is established in relation to the explanatory tantra, just as one speaks of the root and the commentary, so there are three appearances. The first of these is like what is said in the Lamp Illuminating Darkness: "The root of all other tantra sections is the Guhyasamaja." The way it becomes the root will be explained. That is both the root and the tantra, so it is called the root tantra. However, it is not certain that everything that possesses that meaning will be used as a proper name for the root tantra. The second is like the seventeen chapters of the Guhyasamaja that were spoken of earlier being regarded as the root tantra in relation to the eighteen chapters of the subsequent tantra that were spoken of later. In this way, Naropa said that the Condensed Thatness is the root tantra, the subsequent tantra of that Guhyasamaja root tantra, and the subsequent tantra of the eighteen chapters. The Sanskrit word for subsequent is "lama" or "higher," meaning supreme. The latter two can be translated, but some translate it as "supreme," but it is better for the great translator to translate it as "subsequent subsequent," because the commentary also explains it as meaning "subsequent." In relation to the Guhyasamaja, the Condensed Thatness is the root tantra, and this seems to be the view of the Compendium of Conduct as well. Then, if the Condensed Thatness is established as the root tantra in relation to the Guhyasamaja, it is not enough to simply be earlier in time, so what is the reason for that? The Guhyasamaja is divided into the four sections of tantra

Although not a Yoga Tantra, it is generally said to be a Yoga Tantra in many ways. Therefore, combining this and that, it also forms one of the categories of Tantras of Yoga Tantra called Yoga Tantra. Among them, the Tantra of the Collection of That, in terms of skillful means and wisdom, as father and mother, as explained in the commentary on the Hundred and Fifty Verses, is also a Tantra of skillful means. As stated in the Illuminating Lamp of the Sixteenth Chapter, it is also said that some aspects such as empowerment should be understood from this very Tantra, from the Collection of That. Therefore, it is considered to be like the initial foundation, and it is taught in this way, or it should be examined. If the meaning of the former is explained by the latter, and the latter is placed in the later Tantra, then the first chapter of the Compendium Tantra briefly reveals the meaning of the Tantra, and the remaining sixteen chapters explain this. Therefore, the first chapter should also be considered the root Tantra in relation to the sixteen chapters, and the sixteen chapters should also be placed in the later Tantra in relation to the first chapter. Furthermore, there are faults such as the fact that the earlier and later chapters of each chapter should also be established in this way. If it is not established in this way, then from where does the boundary of the later Tantra come? Please tell me. In general, there are many ways to establish the later Tantra, but here I will explain how to establish the later Tantra of the Compendium Tantra. Therefore, the eighteenth chapter is both the Compendium Tantra and is spoken later than the root Tantra of the Compendium Tantra. Because it clearly explains all the common meanings of the seventeen chapters of the root Tantra and the difficult and hidden meanings of each chapter, it is called the Later Compendium Tantra. Therefore, there is no fault that the later chapters of the root Tantra become the later Tantra of the earlier chapters. Secondly, in the explanatory Tantra of the Compendium Tantra, the five that were directly spoken by the noble father and sons are: in the Five Orders, the Questions of the Four Goddesses and the Prophecy of Intent and the Vajra Garland are said to be explanatory Tantras. In the Compendium of Conduct, the Essence of Wisdom Vajra is also said to be an explanatory Tantra. In the Illuminating Lamp, when explaining the first two letters of the introduction, the source of the questions asked by the Lord of the Gods is directly mentioned, and then when explaining the rest, it is said "from the explanatory Tantra," which seems to be the former. Therefore, the questions asked by the Lord of the Gods are said to be explanatory Tantras, and this has not changed.
