Etc. Like the sound of a bell, without interruption, when one thinks with attachment in the mind, dwelling in the fire is peaceful. The words are pure and possess limbs. It is the master who has stopped breath and effort. Having abandoned sleep, contemplate. Thus it is said. The order here is that first, contemplating one's own suchness is indicated by the first four lines, and it is quoted that one should meditate. 138. By whom? By the mantra practitioner. How? Attachment here is grasping as true, and it should be removed. It is not merely preventing attachment to the conventional deity. Moreover, having determined that the limbs such as the eyes are not established in the ultimate truth, one dwells in the freedom from elaboration beyond the eyes, etc., that is, without arising. The way of dwelling is: not distinguishing by the parts of the senses such as the eyes, that is, not being able to grasp, which is the function of consciousness. The mind and mental factors arising from that, together with their associates, are the master, and they are bound by the way in which all entanglements do not arise in the mind, and one dwells in that. Moreover, if one possesses intelligence, one can examine suchness. Then, rising from that, one listens to the mantras of one's own deity, or contemplates the suchness of the sound deity that appears as a sound image, and one's own suchness, the two becoming one like milk mixed with water. When it becomes clear through yoga, then the mantra practitioner will abide in the yoga of the deity who is the nature of sound. The letters of the mantra are joined in a string, that is, arranged, and it is added that one thinks with attachment in the mind. Is it thought that the forms of the letters are joined in a string? Because it is said that the string of the sound of the letters of the mantra is like the sound of a bell. In order to ascertain that, it is said to be a continuous string of letters. What does not change is: the sound of the letters appears continuously and without wavering, so it is like the sound of a bell being struck continuously outside. One should meditate on that sound without true attachment. Then, one contemplates that in the heart of oneself, clear as the deity, a fire like the flame of a butter lamp is burning. And in that, one contemplates that the string of sound previously described is abiding. That is: because there is no harm from heat, etc., it is peaceful. Because the words recited in a whisper and in the mind are pure, those two are absent. Whatever mantra it is, each of its letters possesses uninterrupted limbs.

Therefore, it is said that breath control is necessary to prevent mental scattering. Without breath control, one cannot maintain inner peace, just like livestock. To prevent discouragement or dullness, it is indicated by avoiding sleep, which belongs to the side of discouragement. This is not like reciting mantras in one's own mind, but like listening to others reciting mantras, one's own mind seems to dwell in the form of the mantra's sound. As the commentary says, as long as there are no external or internal signs such as thirst, and one can accomplish what one thinks, these two meditations should be practiced. The external signs are: no suffering from hunger or thirst. The internal signs are: through the power of fire visualization and breath control, a samadhi arises that relies on bliss and warmth. This is also because performing the four-limbed recitation, whether at the end of the recitation or at other times, is done to increase the power of the mantra and maintain inner peace. The commentary says that the fire position makes all recitations powerful and makes the mind abide, therefore it bestows accomplishments. The abiding in sound is: In the later meditation it says: The meditation that abides in sound is: The subtle, stainless moon mandala located in the heart, In which the flame is extremely peaceful and bright, The unchanging basis abides there, Sit comfortably and contemplate the sound, Place the letters on the unchanging one, Meditate only on the sound itself. Thus it is said. The subtle, stainless wheel in the heart, thinking of it is because it is difficult to cut off great discriminations. Previously, on the flame dwelling in the moon, place the basis of the unchanging mantra's letters, the deity's form, and then let it go, and meditate only on the mantra's sound, and when exhaling, visualize one's own deity's form. Here, when visualizing the sound, one does not visualize the deity and the moon or the flame, therefore it is different from the two recitation methods of the four-limbed recitation and the fire position. Doing so is also because other treatises say that when meditating on sound or wind, if one visualizes forms, the mind will be scattered. The Bodhicitta that realizes Suchness is: Abiding in the unique form of non-appearance, therefore it is said to be unchanging.
