Kunnu believes that the earth element should be raised, extended from the nostrils, and kept upright. Shakya Yeshe believes that it should be drawn from the heart. The commentary on Avatara states that as the breath flows from the heart, the essence should be mentally recited and drawn to the tip of the nose. The Secret of the Buddha (Sangye Sangwa) states that when meditating on the subtle vajra point (rdo rje phra mo), blocking the entry and exit of breath and holding the breath in the nostrils will generate a special tactile sensation that corresponds to the state of abiding in the mind. Regarding the method of holding the mind, Shakya Yeshe says: The mad mind, like a wild elephant, acts perversely. Tie it to the pillar of the object of focus with the rope of mindfulness, and then gradually subdue it with the iron hook of wisdom. He quoted from the Heart of the Middle Way (dBu ma snying po) and said that this should be done. Here, wisdom is awareness, so transforming the mind into breath through the two means of mindfulness and awareness is demonstrated by the example of taming an elephant. The basis on which the mind is placed, like the subtle vajra point, is like a strong pillar to which the elephant is tied. The mind that has not become workable is like an untamed elephant. Relying on mindfulness to prevent the mind from wandering from the object of focus is like the rope that ties the elephant. When the object of focus is not grasped as it has been set, immediately recognize it with awareness and keep it in a faultless state, just as if the elephant deviates from the set elephant circle, it is punished with an iron hook. Therefore, there are two key points in holding the mind: first, from the beginning, do not let the mind wander from the object of focus; second, if it wanders, immediately recognize it and settle it again as before. The first depends on cultivating non-wandering mindfulness, so first clearly set the object of focus and generate a strong mindfulness holding, thinking, "I have settled in this way," so as not to wander. If the method of cultivating mindfulness is not strong enough to prevent dullness, therefore, The Ornament of Kosala (Ko sala'i rgyan) says: Abide in mindfulness with clear and non-dull wisdom. The second depends on the method of cultivating awareness, so after mindfulness has bound it, neither too long nor too short, observe from time to time whether the mind abides as it is bound, and without letting go of this observation, just be aware, just be aware. If it is too strict, it will...
