Ro. Therefore, in the practice of the path before that, except for the slight appearance at the time of its manifestation, the three teachers did not explain the four paths and their respective combinations, but it is clear that the practice in accordance with the path of learning up to the attainment of Buddhahood through the five Abhisambodhis. The path below the attainment of Buddhahood through Abhisambodhi is the practice in accordance with the deeds of the already enlightened Buddha. Secondly, there are four: to make oneself a suitable vessel for practicing the path, to purify the vows and precepts after becoming a vessel, to perform the preliminary recitation after abiding in the vows, and to accomplish the siddhi after being able to practice from the recitation. The first is: to be placed in the mandala of the Vajradhatu and others, to be empowered, to be given vows and precepts, and to be made a suitable vessel for practicing the path and so on. Here, there is only the placement in the mandala, and after the placement, there are two types: one who does not hold the precepts of the five families but holds the precepts of the Bodhisattva is only given the initiation of a disciple, and one who holds both precepts is given the complete initiation up to the Vajra Acharya initiation, etc. The intentions of those explained in the Vajra Arising and the Empty Commentary have already been extensively discussed in the explanation of the root downfalls, so I will not elaborate further. The second is: after obtaining the initiation, to purify the vows and precepts that have been promised, because it is indispensable at the beginning, one must strive diligently without being lazy. The Avatara says: "Then, one should please the Lama, and in the great mandala taught by him, and in the mandala of vows, Dharma, and Karma, one should be initiated according to the ritual. One should take the vows through the ritual of the Abhisambodhi of the Mahayana, and one should be skilled in the vows, discipline, conduct, and asceticism that are to be completely protected. From then on, one should always strive diligently without being lazy in order to protect the vows and so on that have been taken, because that is the beginning of accomplishing all the benefits of oneself and others. The vow here is: those who desire the fruit should not transgress it, and the characteristic of entering and withdrawing from virtuous and non-virtuous actions of body, speech, and mind that please and are in accordance with one's own chosen deity is what the Teacher said."

It is the difference in the way of knowing. Thus it is said. The vows spoken from the glorious Supreme First and the Peak, etc., and especially the root downfalls, have already been explained in detail in the explanation of the root downfalls, so they will not be elaborated here. Keeping vows, etc., cannot be accomplished if the characteristics are not complete. The Peak says: In hundreds of thousands of kalpas, even if one strives diligently, four kinds of people in the world, even if practiced, will not be accomplished. Bodhicitta has not arisen, and one is full of doubt, does not act according to the teachings, and has no faith, will not be accomplished. It is said that having these four faults, even if practiced for many kalpas, it will not be accomplished, so one must have four qualities. The gateway to the Great Vehicle, Bodhicitta, is cultivated like a secret instruction, and then the characteristics are generated. One has great faith in the lineage, and there is no doubt or hesitation. The vows included in the precepts of practice and prohibition as taught by the Buddhas can be kept as they are taught. One has firm faith in the deities and the place of the guru. In this way, the practitioner, whether a householder or a renunciate, must practice while abiding in the vows. The Peak says: Abandon killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxicants. Abiding in the vows of a householder, then practice the king of vidyā. If he is a renunciate, then he should truly abide in the three vows, namely the vows of individual liberation, the vows of Bodhicitta, and the vows of vidyādhara, which are the most supreme. It is said that if a householder can also be the basis of individual liberation, then he should practice with the three vows complete. Third, there are two types: yoga with signs and yoga without signs. The first is divided into two: the coarse four-session yoga focusing on the deity and the subtle four-session yoga focusing on the hand symbols. The first is divided into two: meditating in four sessions and what to do when one cannot meditate. The first is divided into two: the four-session yoga of merely receiving the disciple's empowerment and the four-session yoga of receiving the vajra master's empowerment. The first is, the Upper Commentary says: Explaining that there are two different paths from the perspective of the vajra master and the disciple, namely from the perspective of obtaining the vajra master's empowerment and merely obtaining the disciple's empowerment.
