Focus the mind on the appearance of the place of manifestation. Its signs, as previously stated, if one can steadily cultivate what has been attained, then let go of that, and let the part of one's mind that is focused on clearly appear as having the aspect of the sound of mantra, and let the part that holds not scatter elsewhere, but abide in the continuous sound of the mantra, and train in the yoga of combining the two inseparably. This steadiness itself is the meaning of bestowing the yoga of abiding in sound. The two are like, for example, when one's mind is focused single-pointedly on an object, the part that is focused on, such as the face, hands, and feet of the deity, appears clearly at the same time, and the appearance of the earlier part of the sequence of letters, when the later part appears, also appears clearly, this is the steadiness of the mind. Secondly, in this way, from the deity's body to the abiding in sound, holding the mind, with the yoga of wind that restrains the life force and focusing on fire, and with the power of holding the mind single-pointedly on many coarse and subtle objects such as the deity's body. As stated in the "Subahu Pariprccha Sutra", the abiding part is extremely stable, and special joy and bliss arise in body and mind, and physical pliancy arises that makes body and mind serviceable. In particular, by cultivating the wind yoga and fire focus for a long time, bliss-warmth arises, and based on that, powerful samadhi of bliss-clarity non-conceptuality arises, but those are not called completion stage, and the path of cutting the root of existence, self-grasping, has not yet been found, so also abandon the abiding in sound, and meditate on emptiness, the contemplation that bestows the limit of sound. How to cultivate that, not much is said here, it is referring to what was said earlier during the cultivation of my self, so one should take what was said earlier and say it here. That also, as said earlier, negate the self of person and the self of phenomena with scripture and reasoning. One should first seek the Madhyamaka view that realizes that all phenomena are not established in ultimate reality, for if one does not obtain that, there is not even a little meaning in cultivating emptiness with mere non-conceptuality. When one obtains that, the way to cultivate is as stated in the tantra: unmoving, clear. One must cultivate with these two distinctions, if one investigates too much with the view of no-self, excitement arises and causes movement, so one should generate certainty about the meaning of no-self, and even if one focuses single-pointedly on that certainty, one should not investigate too much.

When practicing shamatha-vipashyana meditation in this way, if one focuses too much on the aspect of shamatha, one becomes unwilling to distinguish dharmas, and if one scatters outward, one becomes unable to control it and scatters without awareness. This is because the component of shamatha is too much, and shamatha-vipashyana fails to achieve balance. In this case, if one focuses too much on shamatha, it will lead to lethargy or sinking, as well as drowsiness, thus falling into these states. For example, if one analyzes too much, leading to too much of the component of vipashyana, it will eventually lead to agitation. Therefore, one must both cultivate the ability to analyze by training the wisdom of discriminating awareness, and focus single-mindedly on shamatha. As the commentary says, "Now, I will show that the nature of suchness-wisdom, which is without lethargy and agitation, is the unmoving clarity." Here, unmoving means not wavering. This also explains that the yogi with agitated wisdom, due to being accustomed to discriminating awareness that distinguishes dharmas, causes the mind to waver and cannot be calmed, thus producing agitation. Therefore, the unmoving mind is the quiescence that is close to the path. Quoting this as a basis, it explains that analyzing too much becomes a fault, so one should practice shamatha-vipashyana meditation. Here, the wisdom that distinguishes dharmas is said to have the characteristic of agitation, which means that if one analyzes too much, it will eventually lead to agitation, rather than the wisdom itself being agitation. Similarly, in that treatise it says, "Similarly, what is called clarity is the first, which means being free from faults such as drowsiness." This also explains that the yogi who focuses solely on shamatha, even when distinguishing dharmas, will cause the mind to become lethargic due to being too focused, and drowsiness will become an unfavorable factor in distinguishing dharmas, which needs to be avoided. This also explains that if one focuses too much on shamatha, it will eventually lead to drowsiness and sinking, and it will become an unfavorable factor in properly distinguishing dharmas, rather than saying that shamatha itself will lead to lethargy and drowsiness. Similarly, in the Latter Stages of Meditation, it also says, "When vipashyana is cultivated, if wisdom becomes too strong, then because the component of shamatha is less, like a candle placed in the wind, the mind will waver and will not be able to see the truth clearly. Therefore, at this time, one should cultivate shamatha. If the component of shamatha is too much, like a person controlled by sleep, the truth will not be able to
